M9 Battery Charging in Africa [no electricity]

I know I wouldn't trust $10 ebay batteries in a $7k camera for an important assignment...but good luck with that.

I'd definitely look into a solar system as redbaron suggested.

I may look into the colorspace for future trips, but I usually take a laptop and two identical external harddrives. The photos are ingested, captioned and saved to the local drive on my 13-inch macbook and to each drive, that way I have three copies.

I used to burn DVDs on the road but they're too big to carry and take too much time to burn each night.

Better than take risk with ebay batteries I think it would be so much safer to rely on Leica batteries: 9 should be enough, but yes do have to have a solar charger with you. The Brunton are a good choice as said.

Low cost batteries can even be a risk for the camera. You just would know when it is too late.

I don't know if they are better now but some years ago, my son had a small Canon digital (about 1.6 megapixels - so you can see the age). This used 2CR5 non-rechargeable batteries. It was costing me a fortune to keep him in batteries. I therefore bought a kit of a lithium rechargeable and charger. The lithium battery melted inside the Canon. Amazingly the camera still worked after we scraped out the melted remnants.

Hi, I am new to this forum. I am a pro with 26 yrs experience and I have been asked to shoot a book in East Africa in 2 weeks. Leica's Australian distributors, Adeal, are loaning me an M9 and lenses to take.

Re-reading post, first on assignement you should have provision to be able to pay your consommables, and second I would take no risk with a loaned M9. Further, the Leica's Australian distributors should provide you with the 9 or 12 batteries you do need.

Will do. Thanks for reminding me about the fuse in the charger - I will add that to my spares list!

I suspect the fuse in the charger (at least the 12V supply one) is internal and not user replaceable, so you need a spare charger. That's probably true of the mains supply as well. There's one in the UK plug on the mains lead but probably not on the US or continental lead, so there has to be another internal to the charger. If anyone else knows differently please speak up :).

Thanks Mark and fefe. I believe the village has a motorobike, so some aligator clips with a female cigar lighter socket for the Leica charger adapter might be a good way to go. I will be in Uganda where the daily temp at this time will be between 17 and 27 celcius - pretty mild.

The medical centre runs off a generator I am told, so I am sure I could get some power from a wall socket, but I feel a bit wierd using electricity intended for patients!

I figure each battery would be good for about 400 exposures minimum, probably more assuming I take on board your good advice on camera power time out settings, etc, so if I get 6 batteries, I should be good for the 6 days I am there. :)

Where in Uganda will you be? i've spent a lot of time in Northern Uganda and you wont have problems finding generators and such. Just make sure to bring a very good surge protector.

cheers

Misha, I will be in Mannya a village of about 6000 people, which is down south, about 50 kms from the Tanzanian border.

Danyves, my 10 "cheap" batteries (Ebay/Hong Kong) arrived today. They are marked LiOn 1700 mAh and I have fully charged the first one. Its in the M9 now and I have had the screen on for about 2 hours, shooting, using menus, etc and the battery meter on the back on the M9 still shows 35%. So far, looking good.

I am taking 2 genuine M9 batteries as well, so I have a total of 12 batteries, along with 2 chargers.

Oh .. and my Hyperdrive Colorspace UDMA image bank arrives tomorrow. I am all set!

By the way, I got 10 aftermarket batteries delivered to my door for AU $120 - even if they yield up to 50% fewer exposures, I can live with that as the Leica batteries here are about $150 each.
