M9's Early Adopters vs. Some Waiting

Early adopting of a new product quite often involves living with teething issues.

I think Leica learned their lesson with the M8, there won't be a repeat.

But are some of you intentionally waiting for M9s from a second production line in, say, 2-3 months?

Only Leica knows that. If the current model is bugged they will have to fix the bug. Hardly the case, as many M9 are already circulating.

I would expect changes in firmware in areas like AWB and better noise control, but not changing core logic which is based on customers requests from M8. M9 is a mature product.

Yes, no errors so far except the one about camera going dead by Sean Reid in his review - when he used beta software.

There must be between 1,500 and 3,000 Leica M9 in use now, and no reports of errors. It's very good for both users and Leica Camera AG.

You meant 150 to 300 I hope ... otherwise some dealers and customers (including me) are getting sidelined big time here. First deliveries in most French dealers is announced to be "end of September".

Don't know. Serial seem to have started by 3803501 and some users has serials above 3804400. So at least 900 I guess plus the 120 beta ones that were made in June-July for testing purposes. Providing those serials are exclusive for the M9 and not shared by M7 and MP.

Leica produce and sell 12,000 film M cameras a year, so that gives some idea of the amount they are capable of producing. Year, I know that's a bit vague, but it gives an idea that they won't be able to produce, say 5,000 in a month.

It doesn't say a thing, Thorsten, the numbers with Leica are usually in batches and random within the batch, not sequential. I would put the number of film cameras a lot lower. The last I heard was "a couple of hundred a month" I guess 2000 a year max. The maximum production capacity for M9 cameras is under 100 a day.

This 12,000 number has been bouncing around a lot lately. But that is film cameras which may still be in demand, at least up to that 12,000 number, doesn't mean that is all they can make in a year.

If you use that 12,000 number for top production of the M9's it will take years to supply the orders they already have.

My serial 3804xxx is lower than what you quoted. I wonder what that means of my model. It's not a beta model, I know that.

Hi Thorsten,

It didn't die, it just froze up sometimes under the conditions I described. The firmware used for those tests was actually the current 1.002.

There are some problems that myself and others have noted but basically the M9 is pretty solid in most respects.

Cheers,

Sean

Not sure where you are getting your info from but if you read this forum you will see multiple problems with the M9. Lock ups, slow formatting, slow zoom during review mode, USB port and Mass Storage option not working correctly along with other glitches.

I know everyone that spends $7000US on a camera wants to think it has no problem but that is not the case, right now, with the M9.

Anybody checked for strong light sources at the edge of the frame?

One other thing that gets on my nerves with M8 is having sun (or anything direct and strong) in the shot means some pixel bleeding (or whats the name)....how about M9?

It's just a discussion about how many M9s are out so far, and it looks like serials starts at 3803501 and some users has serials above 3804400. So if your serial is between those, you got one of the first 900.

The beta models are outside those numbers - had entirely different number series.

I think some of us who spend $7,000 was prepared to experience whatever could happen with a new camera. Goes with being first in line to a new product. And as far as I can tell, all those glitches can and will be fixed in firmware updates. So I consider them bugs, not real errors.

If all M9 users get to experience them, they should consider them self lucky - because that would mean they get their M9 very soon.

Only "glitch" disturbing me is the writing speed because the buffer seem to hold 7 uncompressed DNGs along with JPGs, and then the writing causes the potential wait. USB-transfer, zoom review, formatting I don't use but leave my computer doing for the sake of speed and battery life (no matter how it would have worked in the M9).

I think all in all that Leica and the beta testers has done a great job in finishing the camera and prepare it to market. What is there is much less than I would expect. Apple has done much worse, and other too, I'm sure. And not a word about Canon

seems that very few M9's have managed the trip across the pond & those of us in North America are having a mandatory time out for the M9

desire can be enjoyable, particularly with the promise of fulfillment:)

I agree with Mark Norton that the M8 experience with this camera will not be repeated and that while I am certain there will be further firmware improvements with the M9, Leica will deliver a much more finished camera with the first production runs

after all it isn't all that different from the M8/M8.2

my most trusted dealer has my order & he tells me he should be able to get me one by the middle of October

I have a dear old friend's wedding late November in New England & hope to take my new camera for my fall trip
