M9 and Luigi Half Case, a question

I have order a Luigi half case with hanging flap cover for back of an M9 that is on order. It should get here in a couple weeks. I don't know when I'll get the M9, maybe in a month or two, from Dale's in Florida.

Here's my question. The screen cover is plastic and many will apply some protector. But are there M8 or recent M9 users who would go with the Luigi case and NOT apply a screen protector. It would seem to me that with careful use, this might work.

Any opinions and in fact, what IS the best screen protector. Is there anything that does not actually STICK to the screen but maybe hovers above it?

Thanks for any input.

I got a Luigi case with the hanging flap for my M8 (mostly to make it look even less like a digital camera than it already does), and after six months of use (even trailing around on the beach) there's not a scratch anywhere on the screen (or the camera generally).

No need for an extra protector imo.

And the case is really beautifully made, incidentally.

Thank you for the confidence builder. Yes, Luigi does superb work. I have a forest green case for my MP and getting same for the M9, which should be gray, as ordered. Can't wait! Luigi is quite a character...BTW. It's a wonder he has time to answer e mails personally.

I have a half case with handgrip and hanging flap on my M8. it is beautiful, practical, well done product and when aging looks even better( I have it for two years). However if the flap is open and you have metal buttons on your shirt or jacket the screen can be scratched. I have small mark. There are two options: always close the flap when you are not shooting, which is a pain, or buy protective cover. I don't do either of the them for now. When I upgrade to M9 I will get the protective cover.

Not one scratch on the screen after 2 years.

Just some 'wear and tear' on the body, bit of brass showing where there is no protection of the case.

The version with build-in grip lifts the ergonomics to a higher level.

(Pict is from 2007)

I have used Luigi's half-case on my M8 for two years now. I have the hanging flap (not the detachable one). Not s single mark on the screen (and I have never used screen protectors). I got the hanging flap, so the screen is always covered, except to change something in the menu or quickly check an exposure. I'm assuming luigi has an M9 to work with? The bodies are ever so slightly different.

I've ordered one for my M9 but with no flap, just an exposed screen with controls. My idea is that the case will protect the body and screen, but won't compromise use in any way. I was going to go with the flap but thought it would get in the way of really quick iso adjustment, battery checking etc (one more step in each case). I will use a sticky on the screen for final protection.

Good luck with the case and camera.

I also have the elegant dark tan Luigi's case without flap on my M8 (very comfortable). But I've even put a protector on my screen the same day I bought it about a year and a half ago. No scratches at all so far and the protector is very affordable and do not shows any sign of wear.

Great piece of electrostatic plastic.

Luigi's case is a pleasure to see and wear and gives the camera a delightful vintage look.

I'll join the chorus.

I use a half case with hanging flap on my M8 and have had no scracthing issues with my rear screen. The case is sensational, and in fact draws comments from people, who do not see the camera, just the "lovely old case".

Same here, I have a luigi case with a hanging flap. The flap is closed most of the time and the screen looks as new despite the amount of abuse the camera has gone through (the leather case is clearly showing these marks).

I don't see the point in adding another layer of protection on the LCD screen when you already have high quality leather doing exactly that.

On top of it, It really improves the grip on the camera for people with big hands (and I have the case without integrated grip, just a small notch in front).

I have a Luigi case but the stitches rubbing marked the body of my M8 permanently. Therefore I do not use it anymore. Also with thumbs up on, I feel the M8 handles much better than with a case. No plans for a case on the M9.

I had the same thing happen on two different M8 s . It seems to come when you squeeze the case against the body. To avoid this on the M9 ..I put a thin piece of neoprem (like the cases Leica sells) where the thumb goes. Seems to work. I like the Thumbs up and then this avoids the whole issue.

Where is the marking occurring? I have been using Luigi half cases for a long time and have never seen anything like this. I guess since each is handmade there is the possibility that some may do it others may not. Just curious as to where the rubbing is occurring. If you have a photo even better.

Here are the marks. Sorry about the bad picture, iphone is all I have with me currently.

These marks show on both sides of the M8 + in the back, exactly where the stitches are.

I haven't read about this occurring to other Luigi case buyers so maybe I got a defective case (bought second hand). When I realized, it was too late and no way to remove the markings. It's ok, as long as the camera works ;) Yet I am not going to gamble again with the M9, + really the good thing about it is that I got used to handle the M8 without a case and I like it much better this way now.
