Paulu Posted September 22, 2009 Share #1 Posted September 22, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Got my M9 on Friday. First impressions are that it really is remarkable. Colour on a few shots is in another league from the M8. It also is much more practical camera to use. Will report in after a week or two but so far this seems so much more than the hype... Advertisement Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 Hi Paulu, Take a look here My M9. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
thrice Posted September 22, 2009 Share #2 Posted September 22, 2009 I'd very much like to see the colour comparison between your M8 and M9! So far you're the first person to note a difference in colour or tonality (IR issues aside). A little odd given they have the same sensor architecture but they did say the CFA was altered. Either way, congratulations! It seems they're filtering down into resellers now I'm hoping my dealer has one for me in the next few weeks.
jaapv Posted September 22, 2009 Share #3 Posted September 22, 2009 The differences in colour are mentioned in this thread M9 Another Leica Journey (Report) - Page 4 - The GetDPI Workshop Forums. Leica reworked the red Bayer filter, so it is hardly surprising that there is a difference.

Seriously Jaap - do you think the color in the DNGs you've seen so far (sorry about your own camera btw) is in "another league" to the M8? Just wishful thinking imho. It may be slightly (very slightly) different because of the tweaking of the color filters (mostly to help with noise, as far as I can tell). Let's see some proof anyway from the OP - some side-by-side DNG comparisons to see this amazing improvement.
jaapv Posted September 22, 2009 Share #5 Posted September 22, 2009 No, I don't.,Mani. Colour is something I manage in post anyway. Many of my images have been through Lab for adjusting the colour to my wishes. But I understand from the thread on GetDPI that the M9 provides an easier starting point. And I look forward to the 16-bit files. If they match or exceed the DMR I am one happy bunny, as those files are clearly more robust and easier to handle than the M8 files. A result of the DNG compression no doubt. But that is not to say that I would call the M8 inferior - far from it. Maybe this ease of handling the file has improved the color for the OP -it is very possible.

For me the question of color is way too complex and fraught to make any definitive statements. I'm simply amazed that someone can make a "different league" statement about the M9 color vs the M8. Buyer's euphoria was my only serious guess. PS: great to see that DHL have found your camera! When my M8 was delivered by them, I expressly instructed them to ring at least a few minutes before delivery as I work and live within five minute's walk. Naturally they didn't do this, and rather than wait the five minutes, the driver wanted to leave the package outside the door (in central Stockholm!) Oh well. Enjoy your trip! jaapv Posted September 22, 2009 Share #7 Posted September 22, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks, Mani. Another explanation might be that the OP shoots JPG. It appears that the Jpeg engine is vastly improved.
jonoslack Posted September 22, 2009 Share #8 Posted September 22, 2009 Mani, Jaap, Paulu I think the colour is better as well - Despite the fact that Lightroom hasn't got the correct profile for the camera yet (and Aperture come to that). I always had an uneasy relationship with reds with the M8 - it takes some getting used to, but it really is better with the M9. In addition, when I was doing the IR comparisons back in August, I was struck by how the colour on the M9 had more 'thing' than the M8 with filters (not sure if it's the filters or what). So, whilst I wouldn't use the 'other league' expression quite, I do think it's better . . . I've just been going through 2000 shots from Crete (which I know really really well), and the colour is lovely. Of course, as Jaap says, if Paulu is shooting jpg, then it really is a different league - completely different - really!
Paulu Posted September 22, 2009 Author Share #9 Posted September 22, 2009 I am shooting DNG and JPEG into Aperture. I will post some images in the next few days. My sense with the M8 was that colour was slightly chancy - and yes could be fixed in Aperture. My impression with the M9 is much less fixing required. futureancient Posted September 22, 2009 Share #10 Posted September 22, 2009 I agree with you Paulu. Colour I'm getting is better than the M8.. I define it loosely as that, and it is my opinion. So much on the forums revolves around the definitions with this new camera.. one persons 'different league' is another's 'not much difference'. From my own perspective, the important thing is that there is a clear and noticable difference to the positive side, and that is just another in a decent list of improvements. michali Posted September 22, 2009 Share #11 Posted September 22, 2009 I'll throw my 10 cents into this. IMO the colour reproduction on the M9 is superior to what I was getting with the M8, it's one of the first things that struck me, especially the reds.
