Raven 930 Posted September 15, 2009 Share #1 Â Posted September 15, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm after some recommendations re the above. I'm fortunate to have a very good selection of Leica R cameras( including 3 x R6.2s ) and lenses, and fancy exchanging some of the surplus for a Leica M camera and lens. Any thoughts on who to approach for a fair deal? I'm in the Oxford area, but clearly a trip to London is no problem. Thanks
Advertisement Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 Hi Raven 930, Take a look here Secondhand Leica dealers in UK. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
spylaw4 Posted September 16, 2009 Share #2 Â Posted September 16, 2009 You could try (in London) Red Dot Cameras, R.G.Lewis and Richard Caplan.
gabriel Posted September 16, 2009 Share #3 Â Posted September 16, 2009 Red Dot in Old Street close to the City offer a good deal on commission sales plus they shifted my equipment fairly quickly. If you are not pressed for time this is the way to get the best return on used equipment. I believe that the bottom has fallen out of the Leica R used market and it might take time to dispose of your surplus equipment

Thanks The Classic Camera in London, although no longer an official Leica dealer could be worth a look Leica Cameras, Summarit, Voigtlander, Zeiss, Minox Binoculars - Classic Camera Ltd UKÂ In Manchester, Steven's of Salford have alway been very helpful when I have had dealings with them. They are an official dealer. Also Ffordes of Aberdeen always have a good selection and are well respected
moikle Posted September 16, 2009 Share #5  Posted September 16, 2009 Ffordes are also excellent for mail order. ffordes photographic : Main Index  Mike
alun Posted September 16, 2009 Share #6  Posted September 16, 2009 I second Ffordes having bought and sold equipment with them. Their prices are pretty good too.  J. Harris also buys but does not sell Leica stuff: Jonathan Harris - Highest Quality Camera Equipment  You might also try Aperture Cameras: APERTURE PHOTOGRAPHIC SPECIALISTS IN PROFESSIONAL CAMERA EQUIPMENT. Nikon, Canon, Leica and other Professional equipment  And also Peter Walnes -- although I have bought from but not sold to him: used photographic equipment used leica used cameras used nikon - Home

earleygallery Posted September 16, 2009 Share #8 Â Posted September 16, 2009 You could try (in London) Red Dot Cameras, R.G.Lewis and Richard Caplan. Â I'd 2nd these - all good dealers with fair prices. Aperture is a great shop too but they told me they don't want to stock any more s/h R gear so they likely won't be interested in a deal (but you could pick up a nice used M/lens there). Â All of the above have websites so you might be able to get an idea of what your equipment is worth or if they have too much stock of a particular item already. Â If you're looking at ads the AP, don't be tempted by Nicholas Camera in Camden - they don't actually seem to stock anything like the amount of equipment advertised, in fact the one time I visted they didn't seem to stock anything, it was all 'back in the warehouse' wherever that may be! stunsworth Posted September 16, 2009 Share #9  Posted September 16, 2009 In Manchester, Steven's of Salford have alway been very helpful when I have had dealings with them.  Kenneth, it's Stephens - and they dropped the "of Salford" tag a while ago. They're currently in Barton Arcade in central Manchester. Details here...  Home  A very good dealer IMHO, it's interesting that they already have three M8s in the second hand section. cjago Posted September 16, 2009 Share #10 Â Posted September 16, 2009 Ffordes. Â They are near Inverness, not Aberdeen as stated above, but that doesn't matter as they do business by post. I've bought, sold, and used them for commission sales - all without a hitch.

alun Posted September 16, 2009 Share #12 Â Posted September 16, 2009 Alun, has John Harris changed his trading policy? I have bought from him in the past but his website no longer has weekly listings. Â David -- Yes, I believe it's a relatively recent change. I first noticed a few months ago that 'Sell' bit of the website had gone. Presumably the gear they buy is now sold on only to other dealers as opposed to retailing it. Raven 930 Posted September 21, 2009 Author Share #17 Â Posted September 21, 2009 Thanks for the guidance gents..... and no, I hadn't appreciated just what a bath Leica R prices had taken over the past couple of years. I have to presume that at some point a manufacturer will produce a decent digital body that I can use all my superb lenses on?!
gravastar Posted September 21, 2009 Share #18  Posted September 21, 2009 To show you how bad the used R market is, in London last week I tried to offer some R lenses in part exchange for an M 24mm Summilux and was told by the shop assistant that he would probably be fired by his manager if he did. Most R lenses in their window were around the £299 -399 mark regardless of what they were. Oh, and the lenses I was offering him were the 35-70 2.8 Apo and the 70-180 2.8 Apo, no slouches! they just weren't interested.  Bob.
jpattison Posted September 21, 2009 Share #19 Â Posted September 21, 2009 As Stunsworth says, David Stephens in Manchester would sell them on commission, if you can wait! Â John

Thanks Having followed your thread with interest and noted the woeful prices likely to be realized on your R lenses, is it rocking the boat too much to suggest that the kit is probably well worth keeping? Use it to produce stunning quality mounted wall prints and continue to enjoy Leica optical quality which attracted you to the lenses in the first place. Perhaps, like me, you will also continue to enjoy the sheer handling of your R equipment (M in my case) fired by pride in possession. Just a thought!
