Firmware Update Update

... IMHO this picture does not illustrate the banding issue (which shows as faint vertical parallel 'stripes' at high ISO) but just the well known and understood green line: caused by an overload of light on neighbouring pixels (usually just outside the frame). ...

Sander, that was my first impression as well, but this seems to be something different. AFAIK, the Dreaded Green Stripe is caused by confusion in data from the edge reference pixels, just as you said.

I've never seen it start with overexposure from anywhere except the edge. And here, it would be a reflection from the overexposed other half of the sensor.

Do you suppose this might be a new manifestation of the Green Blob instead?

foot, I'd show Leica the image. Has your camera been serviced after the end of January, 2008? If so, this may be a new phenomenon. Green Blobs were cured very early. Green Stripes are very rare but understood. They are covered in the M8 FAQ.

It has never been serviced in the past two years, but only this image (and one other, I think) and the shutter issue has been the only things bugging me about this camera so far. Oh, and the low-battery life of one of my batteries. That's really about it for me; I hope it's all fixed in the next firmware update.

Thanks, folks.

Actually, revenue comes from CUSTOMERS, not cameras, and those customers are certainly still able to produce revenue (lenses and referrals now, M9 later?), and maintaining the M8 firmware would help create that elusive Holy Grail - the "lifetime customer". The whole M8 experience (I was an early user) certainly shook my formerly unshakeable loyalty more than a bit.

A few others (e.g. Apple Computer) understand the value of loyalty of existing customers, and keep the firmware coming, to their quite obvious benefit later on.

I can agree with this. I hope things start panning-out and the revenue stream allows Leica the luxury of the long-term view. But for the moment, with their backs to the wall, I can also understand their caution.

Let's wait and see.

I would just like to say that if any future firmware upgrade could include the manual lens selection function that is on the M9 I for one would even be happy to pay for it.

In the interview with Stefan Daniel he says that this hasn't been offered because of cost. I assume it would involve a fairly major rewrite of sections of the M8 firmware. Sometimes a modification that seems simple and straightforward to the user can be very difficult to code.

Read it again and do not worry any more , you just have a green line. You can search the forum for more info.

This is the only thread I could find (I admittedly did not pore through every single thread) about this same issue, but no resolution.

Leica emailed me back and ask that I reformat the SD Card (I have no idea which one I used; my trip was so long ago), reformat on the camera, and if it came up again to get it serviced.

Oh well.

I really would like if they figured out what eats files. I just lost couple of days of every day shots again. I know I had files because I reviewed them. Then went on the trip (without downloading these files) and continue to shoot on same card. Only files from the trip are there. Only thing I did is changed the battery before taking off, but I changed it after ward as well.

This is mysterious and more than frustrating. My practice is to install a new card before any fresh shoot, certainly before departing to a new location. I think it is too risky to take unbacked-up images away from home. Cards are one of the smallest costs for digital capture.

I think the only way to get an M8 firmware upgrade with M9 features is to sell your M8 and buy an M9. I have an M8u and will hold on to it well after the M8 sell off frenzy dies down. I ran out and bought one of the first M8 but now since I have a digital M, whats the rush.

I think the M9s firmware was completely resigned and just might not be worth it for them to try to implement them into a different firmware design.

well I think it would be a good idea to offer some sort of paid for software /firmware update. Personally I would be prepared to spend a few £s on it.

I agree, but most wouldn't want to spend much since we are use to them being free. Apple charged $10 once for an ipod touch update. Hint hint ;^)

tanka, have you talked to Leica about this?

Others who had what I think were similar problems had their cameras repaired.

Has yours been to Leica for service after January 2008? If so, you shouldn't be seeing something like this.

Hoco,

I have not talked to Leica. I should put that in my todo list. No, mine has not been to Leica service except in 2007 for original problem fix, the lucky first batch.

Thanks for the suggestion, I should do that.

I used to do that regularly. But, since starting to use 4GB cards, habit has changed a little since there is plenty of space. David, like hoco said, I should talk to Leica. One of these days, it wouild be really important picture that I might end up loosing.

Leica,

If possible with the M8's firmware, please include the ability to turn off the timer with a menu option:

Leica M8 Software Timer Fix, Please : Notebook : Simon Griffee · Photographs

Oh yes, p l e a s e ! ! !

I found it very hard to believe that Leica didn't change that main switch for the M9 (which has lost us all so many shots on the M8). At first I supposed it was a question of cost reduction to simply keep that silly thing in the M9, but when I saw that apparently they put the same basic switch design on their brand new X1 I finally realized that there really must be someone at Leica who actually thinks this switch is a good idea. Now, how silly does this switch become when you disable part of it via firmware in order to keep it from doing harm? That's really pathetic.

Nevertheless, since the fatal switch design is there and seems to be destined to stay I sincerely support your request: Leica, please do let us have that little firmware revision to keep the switch from ruining any more pictures!
