mmx_2 Posted September 14, 2009 Share #1 Posted September 14, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello everyone! Since I'm one of the happy owner of the Leica M8 Panda, I've been wondering about production numbers of these cameras? Somewhere 500 is noted and in other places you can read about 100. And also, mine is with BLACK leica logo and others that I've seen are with RED logo. Joakim

jaapv Posted September 14, 2009 Share #2 Posted September 14, 2009 There are no production numbers, as it is not really an "official" variant because quite a number have been created by users simply replacing the controls.

But, there is a major difference; the Leica M8 Panda is painted black instead of the black chrome normally used. What I have been able to find out so far is that there were made a pre-production series of five cameras with chrome controls and a red dot. Of course very hard to verify since the dot is easy to change. It is official actually, at least according the the Leica importer in the Nordic region. jaapv Posted September 14, 2009 Share #4 Posted September 14, 2009 In that case (didn't see M8 ) it is different. The logo is user-exchangable. Nowadays the factory only supplies red ones.
rob139 Posted September 14, 2009 Share #5 Posted September 14, 2009 mmx_2: I have got the same Panda, and wrote an e-mail to Solms. This was (a part of) the answer I got. ...I can herewith confirm that your camera with serial number 319**** is one out of 138 cameras in total, which have been finished with black paint top cover/bottom plate and silver chrome operation elements, whereas “normal” M8 do have black chrome finish overall for covers and operation elements. As this camera is not an official “Special Edition” in the traditional meaning, it is not equipped with a special numbering or a certificate. In any case, it is a very rare and (in my opinion) beautiful combination... This was a mail from Stefan Daniel, from Leica. The total of 138 is the same as the most exclusive special edition M ever, the MP black. Coïncidence? A very exclusve camera indeed! So exclusive that it has never been reviewed by Puts or Ried. They must have overseen it. Rob
