Back to the roots. 28 cron, 50 lux asph, 90 AA. With the brilliant lux as body cap

One lens solution, 35 cron.

Same for me - 18 zeiss / 21 elmarit || 135 Apo Telyt will come out for special projects. I may sell the 75 cron asph to help fund a second M9... any takers?

I may be interested, but need to check performance of 60 Hex on M9. I sent you an email on subject.

I would keep my lenses for the moment. In a few days my pocket will be empty. So the 15CV, the 28Elmarit, the 50Cron and the 75 Cron. In the future I would like to have the 50 summilux and the 90 Cron. Oh... maybe the 135mm apo telyt 3.4 as well. Oh... may be the 18mm Super-elmar 3.8 as well, and the 24mm 1.4 summilux (or better for the M9 the "28mm 1.4 summilux"??? :D would be so nice...)

Primary lenses: 28 Summicron, 35 Summilux ASPH, 50 Summilux Pre-Asph

Travel kit/big assignments: all of the above plus 21 Elmarit Asph and 90 Summicron AA

Simple one-lens kit for street work, etc.: M9 and 35 'Lux

I used to think of the 28mm as my main lens but after getting used to the 24/M8 combo I'm thinking the 35 will be my main lens.

I definitely regret selling my black paint 35 'cron ASPH, it would be my street and holiday lens. I may have to pick up another one.

Not sure about my 75 Summicron. I may hold on to it as backup but I don't see it getting much use.

Definitely selling the 24 Summilux, it's the best lens I've ever used but it's too wide to be my primary lens on full-frame and I can't afford to keep it as a lens for special situations.

Hello. This is my first post on the forum. I am seriously contemplating switching from my D700 to the M9 for a few major reasons, including the fact that I hate the bulk, weight, and obviousness of using the D700, as well as the legendary quality of Leica lenses. About 90% of my photos are candids I take of family and friends in the 35-100mm range, and it would be fantastic to be able to be quiet and unobtrusive while shooting, and at the same time getting the quality of Leica glass (I am currently using Zeiss ZF lenses for the most part). The other 10% of the time I shoot landscape or travel shots.

If I sell all of my gear I would have enough to buy the M9 and have about $7500 left for lenses (yes, I bought a lot of gear! I am a bit of an obsessed amateur). I am a bit overwhelmed by the lens choices for the M mount and need a suggestion for a couple of lenses. I would like to get fast lenses, and can start with two (or three) and then save up for more if I feel the need. I was thinking of 28mm, 50mm and 90mm (and down the road, a 135mm). I can't afford to get the absolute top of the line Leica for all of these, but something that can provide a lot of the quality for a bit less cost. 90mm is definitely my favorite focal length, followed by 50mm and then either 28 or 35. I am very open to buying used lenses as well. I see that Zeiss has the ZM line for Leica, which is pretty tempting since I really like my Zeiss ZF lenses, although one of my reasons for considering switching to the Leica rangefinder system is to be able to use Leica glass.

Any tips on which lenses for this budget would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Peter

Ok - now that I found and ordered one - my third lens will be the discontinued 75 Summilux f/1.4. Full explanation of why I think this will be a key lens on the M9, and likey to dry up on the used market real fast, is here: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/98128-m9-report-salt-lake-city.html

But in short - tightest-framing M lens (except for the Macro f/4 90 and the 75 f/2), longest focal length that focuses easily on .68x rangefinder, speed that allows avoiding noisy ISO 2500.

I could get by with a 2-lens kit - 21/75 - for a long time before I get around to adding a 35 of some kind.

35 cron asph 50 lux asph.

I am considering selling the 50 lux to buy a75 lux (if I can find one).

On the M8 the 50 was great for portraits, on the M9,50 seems a bit short to me.

If I don't find a 75 lux, I will go maybe for a 90 cron.

I found that I felt comfortable with a 2 lens kit.

I will probably add a much wider one later for lanscape and architecture but really as a side lens.

All the best,

Jean-Luc

Jean-Luc: RE the 75 Summilux - You could try the U.S., especially given our weak currency. KEH in Georgia has 2-3, Tamarkin in NY has 2-3 (I just grabbed one from him!). Photovillage in NY has several (higher prices, though) Prices range $1700-3700 depending on vintage, coding, etc.

Google the store names to find their catalogs online.

Thanks Andy for the tip.

I would wait until you've tried focusing the 90 compared to the 75 on the M9 - and also check out the framing at the close-focus limits (unless those aren't important in your work). I was planning on 21/35/90 myself until I tried my rep's old 75 f/1.4 on the M9. Big mistake!
