Thanks for the nice review, David.

I did bring the flower jpgs into CS3, but it didn't help (on a NEC 2690). It looks like some of the reds went out of gamut and were lost on jpg conversion. Could you possibly post a reprocessed L1001324, or put the DNG somewhere we could give it a whirl?

Thanks again!

Clyde

Thanks David for all this information. I can't wait for getting my M9.

Can you comment on the apparent lack of HSS (high speed sync) support in the M9? I had started a thread on this yesterday (http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/97790-high-speed-sync-what-am-i.html) but I guess that it got overlooked in all the excitement :)

Actually, that's a great question. I know that the S2 supports HSS with the SF58. I didn't really think about why the M9 doesn't. And, I didn't ask Stefan about it. Let me look into this.

David,

Your on!

I would love to meet up as well!

Hollywood FLA is no strange place to me. I used to stay at the old Diplomat Hotel when I was a boy with my parents, and loved to eat at Pumpernicks and The Rascal House! I have a second home on Singer Island to the north today, but live mostly in Allentown PA.

Loved your review!

Dear David,

Many thanks for a wonderful review/report on the new Leica M9.

You managed to create an atmosphere which made me feel like I was there with the three of you, holding and using this beautiful new piece of photographic equipment in a very pretty part of the world. I felt that you gave an honest appraisal of the M9 and I look forward to getting my hands on one to use along with my M5, M7 and MP. We have to wait a couple of weeks till they arrive out here in Australia. Your superb photographs included have me thinking that I just might have to go out and buy some of that fabulous Summilux glass whilst I am waiting!

Thanks once again.

Kind Regards

Peter

This "review"- by David Farkas- was very helpful to me and well written. Since I live in Seattle, USA and as such I buy my Leica Ms from Glazers who has always given me excellent service. However, Mr. Farkas has provided lots of helpful information to this forum and he deserves our thanks.

I'll be going to Seattle in early October for the LHSA Annual Meeting. If you're not already an LHSA member, you should consider joining and attending the meeting. Highly recommended.

Hope to see you there.

David,

I must say that your images (especially, the large ones) are the best I have seen in the web so far compared to all of the other samples. Even the Leica brochure did not really bring out the best of this new camera. The shots in the brochures, IMHO, were focused too much on the artistic side of things.

Were your images shot from a production M9 or a pre-production version?

Thanks for your kind words. If you thinik the 1500x1000 shots are good, you should see the full size images! :D I'm considering going back and putting in some 100% crops on a few images just to show the detail.

I believe we had production M9s (I wsa using S/N 3804376), but we were using pre-production firmware 0.912.

David:

A really outstanding review -- thank you for posting it.

I feel like the images from the M9 seem more 3-dimensional than what I've seen from the M8. That could just reflect your skill as a photographer, but wonder if you can comment on this. Do you get this sense?

Sean,

Let's do it again when the M10 comes around!!! :D Next time, though, I'm sitting to your right. ;)

David

It actually happened for real this past Friday. I was stung and hospitalized for Anaphylactic shock. I had a 12-hour shoot the next day and had to do that on steroids so as to keep breathing (always useful). Those little insects scare the hell out of me. I have a short period on the Epi-pen to get to the hospital or I'm done.

The anecdote: I have a lethal allergy to wasps and Germany had an unusually high number of them this August. On our trip people almost always wanted to eat outdoors. David was to my left when a wasp came after me. Swinging my hat close to me (rather than out near the precious German beer we were all drinking) I accidentally ended up knocking a good bit of Caesar salad onto David. The salad was good though and it turns out that Wetzlar has excellent dry cleaning.

As I'm right-handed David you should be safe on my right next time. And Christian has the art of wasp trapping and water torture down to an art - though I still think that waitress should have been warned. <G> And Amy (Kosh - Leica USA's S2 Specialist) is weally qwuite a gwood wasp warrior as well.

Long live the B52.

Cheers.

Sean
