Can you tell which one is the M8, 5D, or D200?

Ha ha, no the roadster is not up for a prize. It is my new toy car. The Vette is just too uncomfortable to drive on the street anymore. 617 HP to the ground and almost 1g on the skid pad can quite literally fatigue a person for any extended period of driving. It was time for a little more finese in a fun handling car.

PS. Keep up the good work on the reviews even though some always find a reason to complain or have 20/20 hindsight vs. expressing their own honest and logical opinions as you do in a timely manner to help others.

No I'm not a photographer by trade. Photography is supposed to be fun for me. The only photography "work" that I do is some occassional work for the local paper at the Nascar or NHRA races, or wide angle stuff at sporting events.

 

I hate to carry lots of kit, and despise the form factor of a huge DSLR with monster zoom attached.

 

Most of the printing I do for myself is 8x10. If I have something that I really like and want larger it goes to a good local lab.

 

My point to this silly thread, was that with the form factor of size, ergonomincs, and convenience in favor ofthe M8 it is really indistinguishable from the other cameras. That to me makes it the best. I did this in a manner (for me) that actually showed the M8 handled the highlights better and had better tonal range (What a bonus).

 

With the M8s problems, I was very frustrated and had a doubt in my mind on whether to keep it or return it and sell the D200 to buy a 5D. Guy loaned me the IR filter and was suggesting to keep the M8 and buy good primes for the D200. Tony Rose sent me the Zeiss primes. I rented the 5D and 24-70L from Tempe Camera. As I have already tried the D2Xs and was not impressed with IQ over the D200, it was out. I also really hate the bigger size of 1DsMkII and eliminated it without even trying it based on size and my uses.

 

Over the weekend, I shot hundreds from each camera in real life at a huge Custom Car show and on the street at night in our busy college bar area. For my use the M8 won with a large margin. I'll also be keeping the D200 with Zeiss primes (50 = 75, 85 = 128, the soon to come 100 = 150, and my nikon 200 = 300 plus teleconvertor). Pixel peeping the 5D may have had some advantages, but in printing I think preferred the M8.

 

If the Canon body was more like the D200 with sealing, ergonomics, menus, and they had better wide primes my decision would probably have been different.

 

As others say "horses for courses".

dang i missed out

i picked the canon, weird stuff happens with white in canon images in my view

but i had no clue about the other two

but if i had a gun to my head i would have said M8 was the first, so i would have been wrong

 

so it goes

 

quite a fun thing this thread

interesting to see who wouldnt state what they thought too

and wrong or not, those who would

Not having shot with either cameras I didn't venture to guess which was what, but I did suspect the third shot was the Leica shot. It would be interesting - as someone else suggested - to see what the 5D shot looks like with a Leica lens, or with the new 50mm Canon L prime lens, I believe it is f/1.2. Thanks for a fun thread.

I can tell you that not knowing what's what, I like the first image best, the third image second best, and the second image last. I eagerly await the revealing of the mystery. I don't own any of these three cameras but I do see differences even without an actual print.

My only question about the three shots is, did the M8 get the wall color right and the other two cameras got it wrong or vice versa. The Nikon and Canon rendered the wall around the garage door beige/yellow but in the M8 shot the wall color was at most off-white. Which camera(s) came closest to the real thing? Thanks.

Oops, I just realised that my comment about you not being a photographer could be read two ways. What I meant was that your toys are too expensive :) Photographers rarely make that kind of money. The test was fun, although limited.

Ouch, maybe I shouldn't have sold my D200 after all ... :)

Dare I say that I still think I prefer the # 1 photo on the top, and that was why I guessed it had to be the Leica ...

I had D200 with the 50mm + 85mm ZF lenses. But I experienced so heavy inconsistence between the sharpness in the viewfinder, the green focus confirmation spot and the occasional nailed focus shots so I gave up on it. It was completely random, like shooting blindfolded. Looks like it was maybe just my sample of the camera, which on the other hand worked all right with autofocus lenses.

Now my ZF lenses just sit on the shelf looking for a good home or a new camera model with a better viewfinder suited for manual focus and with the screen being exchangeable without surgery.

Still, these images are just heavily resized 200 Kb webpics, and with the lack of an appropriate profile for the M8 with IR filter. But the german optics are definately doing very well, both of them.

Hey Bondo! I also have the 50 Planar and you're right, nailing the focus is tricky and if the lens is wide open it's difficult to get a good shot sometimes, you can't completely rely on the green FC dot. I don't think it was you or your particular camera, the D200 is after all designed for the use of AF/VR lenses. After months of use I now can feel my way a bit better with it and am getting some tremendous results, esp. at f/4. One nice thing, as you know and M8 users are discussing now, is the ability in-camera to specify the manual lens' aperture and maximum f/stop, eliminating the need for lens coding or communication. We had a discussion about this some months ago where the use of aftermarket screens was looked into, I believe Guy had a line on it and Sean discussed the ZF on the D200 a bit. I posted a couple shots with it to demonstrate it's OOF (aka bokeh) characteristics, which I believe are exceptional, very smooth, and at least, what I like. Is the 85's bokeh similar to the 50's?? - I've been tempted alot by that lens, but am definitely going to get the ARRI-ZF Makro 100 next spring. I feel that when the FF 22mp D3X arrives, I'll be all set! Just wish Leica would do a couple lenses for the F-mount. Sorry about being so OT. -John

Check out Brightscreens. Now that I'm going to keep the D200, they are installing their screen with the microprism center. I should have it back next week.

 

I did notice the same difficulty focusing wide open as you did. You can't always always go by the green confirmation dot, as it stays lit for a small range where your eyes have to be the judge.

 

Send me an email off-line and I'll let you know how the new screen works next week and send you a couple files from the 85 so that you can judge for yourself. It is a very nice lens.

I think i may have adopted the king of the screens with the DMR. LOL i work with Jim at Brightscreen with the DMR we gave him what we were after and I was a beta tester for him along with Kit in Australia and he did a real nice job for the DMR screens and he was going to make them for the D200 also, so i would look into them. I still have the Prototype in my DMR 13mm micro prism circle compared to Leica's 7mm so almost twice as big a area which I like. Bill Maxwell is a another guy that does coatings on existing screens also. I would check maybe some of the Nikon forums and ask some questions.

I just talked to Jim today and am sending him my D200 for that screen you mention. It is going out Tuesday for him to get Wed. He said that he could get it back to me about the middle of next week.:D

 

I'm really looking forward to having a focusing aid on the screen of the D200 for those new Zeiss lenses.
