You are correct, and I think this has been eluded to in the thread. Frankly the 2 distributors I have talked to feel threatened, and wonder why they are investing in Leica product. Mayfair is trying very hard to calm things down and Brett's excellent workshop is one great step in that direction. Time will tell ...... They are all more than capable of managing their respective businesses and IMO it is no business of anyone leaping in and trying to tell them what to do or how to do it. I agree that any business manager has the task to make their own decisions and take the pain or the gain as a consequence. I also believe that any successful business will : Listen to clients, and be driven by their clients... Respond rapidly to address client complaints and difficulties Welcome and encourage continuous feedback from clients and the market with a view to improving or fine tuning the offer, the strategy, and the market positioning. I believe that this thread is actually highlighting a range of impressions about Mayfair that suggests Leica may wish to clarify the goals etc. and how the strategy is to compliment the efforts of the dealers, which is what I understand is the plan. As regards the Leica shop stocking non-Leica products, other perhaps than related minor accessories, the shop is a flagship store for the promotion of Leica photographic products. To use an analogy, one would not expect the Apple Store to sell Motorola phones in competition with its own product, would one? OK...I agree. I accept that I am wrong about 15mm Zeiss lenses. Other than sensor cleaning which if offered as a paying service will require someone properly trained and very competent to carry it out, camera adjustments are best carried out by a qualified technician in a proper workshop with the necessary equipment and tools; and not in a shop back-office. OK we agree on sensor cleaning as a paid for service ....maybe Leica can show people how to do this and sell the kit. OK We agree that camera adjustment is best carried out by a qualified technician, with the correct tools and equipment........However surely this is similar to going to various Rolex outlets where they have an on site technician that has equipment to calibrate and adjust.....but is NOT equipped to do a full service. Since several forum members adjust their M cameras themselves I wonder why the Mayfair facility cannot offer this level of service. The official dealers will, unlike the Leica Shop, accept trade-ins, deal in second-hand items, and frequently discount prices. I absolutely agree and see this as a major role of the distributor. It has been suggested however that Leica AG would make more margin whenever they sell directly if no secondhand item is involved. Hopefully Mayfair continue continue to make the heavy level of investment that Mayfair represents (4 staff, High Rental , Inventory costs etc) without going direct. Please bear in mind that any £ spent in the Leica shop is one less £ spent with the official dealers and you all need to continue to support your local dealer who has given you excellent service in the past. The alternative could well be the gradual demise of the dealers and the consequent lack of choice and facilities. You are absolutely correct and that is why I have made it clear that I plan to support my dealer (RG Lewis), and other dealers that seem to have an excellent level of accessories, used items etc (Red Dot, Richard Caaplan for example) unless I start seeing financial incentives to go direct.......... Given its location I was worried it would be very snobbish, but I was glad I was wrong. Every member of staff were absolutely brilliant. Those in the UK who live too far away to benefit should be fulminating about the lack of similar facilities where they live. Those overseas should perhaps address the policy of Leica Camera in their own country of birth or adoption. I have much to tell them about the layout of their shop, product offerings, availability of smaller hard to find items (multi colour drawing pins, can't find them anywhere! When's the last time you saw a sherbert dip?) and ideas for seminars and other services they could provide. Without my input I'm worried that they may fail.
