mobius32 Posted September 10, 2009 Share #1 Posted September 10, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello: I'm just learning about Leicas ... I've seen a number of Leicas offered for sale and advertised as "never used," "used only 3-4 months," et cetera. But in the case of an M6, for example, is it good for the camera to have been sitting in its box for 10 or more years, unused? If one were to purchase such a camera what would be the likelihood that it would need to be sent to Leica or a third-party for CLA'ing? Thanks. Advertisement Posted September 10, 2009 Posted September 10, 2009 Hi mobius32, Take a look here "Unused Leicas". I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
luigi bertolotti Posted September 10, 2009 Share #2 Posted September 10, 2009 If a M6, new or little used, has been kept in box for 10 years (without battery, I suppose) it's at all probable that it simply works perfectly when taken out. And the CLA needed for a slightly used (and properly working) M6 isn't costly ... in Europe something around 150-200 Euros all inclusive. For film lovers, M6 is an excellent camera to buy for using... probably the best value for money; of course one has to like the idea of using a RF camera, and must budget for a pair of lenses, for which an exceptionally wide range of possibilities (used and new) exists : to give an idea... for a classical Leica pair 35+90 one can spend from 300 to about 6000 Euros... And Welcome to the Forum !!! Pity you didn't register one day before... 09/09/09 will remain as a famous date, for us...
richam Posted September 10, 2009 Share #3 Posted September 10, 2009 I bought an M42 that had been in storage some time. It didn't want to work smoothly at first, so I cocked and released the shutter 10 times at each shutter speed. After that, it works just fine without any need for CLA. I try to exercise all my Ms the same way every 6 months or so. And welcome to the forum and world of Ms.

gvaliquette Posted September 10, 2009 Share #6 Posted September 10, 2009 Thank you, Luigi. I suppose my next challenge will be making sure that I deal with a knowledgeable and reputable Leica dealer (here in the U.S.) If you are in the NYC metro area, try Bergen County Camera; they are genuine Leica fans. And there is always www.keh.com for mail orders; they are honest. have fair prices and you can return the merchandise if you are not happy. When I bought my M6ttl it was five years old approx, but had never been used, a collectors item kept in a glass case apparently. It worked fine straight out of the box but seemd a bit noisier than the M3, like it had dried out and needed shutter lubrication. As it happened it got dropped a year or so later (not my fault, honest!) and went to Malcolm Taylor, he explained that it is the brakes on the shutter which make the most noise, and they are not always as well adjusted as they might be when leaving the factory, now its fine.
