Thanks for posting these shots. I played with one of your images to see what the skin tone looked like after a B&W conversion. I hope you don't mind. Seems very similar to the M8 stamp.

why the hell do people save jpegs out at like quality 6 or 7 ?

 

it looks totally abysmal

Thanks Chris. I also see that cyan shift in all of the pictures posted that I've seen. I had that with my M8 and it was fixed by just a tweak of my profiles. I'm sure/hoping that updated software in LR2 or the M9 will be released that might smooth that out.

 

How do the files compare to your 5DMkII? I would imagine much less in-camera processing so the images out of the camera will have more channel noise but, will be very sharp looking. I prefer to chose how to PP my own files so I'm hoping the increased ISO performance will make for some great files that don't look plastic and will hold up well when put through Noise Ninja.

 

Could you get a picture of that wine bottle on your kitchen counter so I can make an A/B comparison? :D

Hi - not shot full DNGs as yet - and only had some 2GB SD cards around.

Immediate impression re responsiveness is good. Same as M8u. NOTHING feels negative for the moment apart from a minor annoyance where when you switch from Play to Info and back to Play, the screen blanks... NOT fixed by the new firmware which I've just installed (1.02)...

 

 

So Chris this was not from just the INFO button, where it displays battery level and shots remaining, but when you are reviewing a image then hit INFO then again hit INFO to turn it off the screen goes blank? Is that correct?

 

Let me add that hitting the Play button a second time when reviewing a image with or without the INFO screen showing the camera thinks you are done and turn the review off. It is like this on the M8 and the only time that is different is if you have zoomed in on a image. Then the play button will take you back to normal/full view with INFO showing or not.

Seems like many initial pics are showing a somewhat exaggerated red saturation, especially noticeable with underexposure and caucasian skin...may be of concern without input profiles we used for the M8(.2) in C1.

 

What are your thoughts.

Reds do seem to be looking a little exaggerated and rather magenta. I looked for a recognisable known colour and noted the Parcel Force vans with quite pink/magenta hue.

It's been suggested elsewhere that M9 DNGs are not compatible with Capture One: Chris Tribble's images readily convert to Tiffs with C1 v.4.8.2, CS3, and RAW Developer. Some colour differences between these, CS3/RAW fairly close. For some reason CS3 conversion sees file as smaller, 3271x4915 pixels vs. 3468x5212 with others.

C1 profile shows automatically as 'DNG file neutral'. Colours ghastly if you change ICC to Leica M8 generic: maybe what the other poster meant by 'not recognised'.

 

Attachment via C1. I don't see the post office vans as offensively 'pinkish' or magenta by the way.

As far as I can tell from downloading a DNG and opening it Lightroom /ACR doesn't yet have a profile for the M9. Could that be the cause of the problem?

Bo, it seems to me that there is a nasty mix of lights used in your pic that I would attribute the terrible colours to. Looking at the chrome strip around the window shows on the right the presence of strong fluoro light and on the left a very red coloured light. Is this not the source of the problem?

I shot this today at Pictureline in Salt Lake City. The reds and pinks aren't nearly as pronounced. I agree that the reds in your shot are probably because of the lighting.

The wild red is probably caused by the red Leica neon sign infront of his head.

 

so far I am very pleased with the colors I have seen. I am not concerned with slight color casts at this point as the firmware will surely receive lots of tweaks.

 

Wow pictureline looks like a very sharp looking outfit. sure beat Samy's in terms of appearance.

They are certainly not (yet) compatible with C1. The colours are way off and the profile isn't nearly correct.

 

Some DNGs from the M9 won't open at all in C1. These ones do, but the color is terrible (check the skin tones) from any available profile. Clearly the M9 is a different beast than the M8 :)

The placeholder profile for the M9 in CaptureOne 4.8.2 doesn't work at all. Probably there is some mismatch between the ID string that Phase put in it and the one that Leica has ended up using. When presented with a .dng file that has first been through ACR and output as a losslessly compressed dng, C1 gives you the generic neutral dng profile, which is a starting point but not a very good one. I use it with the Ricoh GR-D's and it takes some work to finish the job. I think that explains the files which are working with 4.8.2. DNG files straight from the M9 should be fixed in size, either 36MB or 18 MB.

 

A less annoying solution is to revert to 4.8.1. Go to PhaseOne's website, and search for the "Capture One archive" or "software archive" and you'll find a downloadable copy.

 

Let's hope there is an update for the M9 with a tested profile shortly.

Hey Jaap--that's flattering, but let's wait until C1 actually releases a compatible update and *then* we'll see if we need profiles or not.

 

I hope not. The skin color, so far, from LR / ACR is not very encouraging, I have to say.. it's a bit blotchy. But I'm sure that's still being tweaked on both sides.

Using an M8 profile in C1 will be a problem - the color response of the M9 is different (the ColorMatrixes in the DNG show substantial differences)

Some responses and comments below. I will post some daylight shots later today - I have to go from London to Cheshire for the weekend, so will grab things as I go. I'll try to shoot across the ISO range...

Maybe I'd just not noticed this on the M8 - closer scrutiny than usual being given to a new tool!

I was actually very happy with the red vans - this was late evening autumn light with a beautiful pink sunset - everything glowed!

This is essential to remember - it was the same in the gallery - taken around 1830 with sunlight + tungsten + neon. EVERY thing was warm.
