sm23221 Posted September 9, 2009 Share #1 Posted September 9, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) On page 21, under TOUGH, the brochure states: "People who take photography seriously usually live their lives at the edge; in searing heat or bitter cold, pouring rain or swirling dust. The M is built to be consistent, dependable and tough under almost any imaginable condtions". I guess we can now make photos in the rain?
Advertisement Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 Hi sm23221, Take a look here M9 weather tight. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
rob_x2004 Posted September 9, 2009 Share #2 Posted September 9, 2009 Yea yea sure. When I see it.
Bo_Lorentzen Posted September 9, 2009 Share #3 Posted September 9, 2009 Hmm. that is a interesting way of reading that part... they sure do emphasize rain and dust. though one would think they would mention weather sealing and not just how strong the box is.? . sm23221 Posted September 9, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted September 9, 2009 Misleading advertisement then?
Bo_Lorentzen Posted September 9, 2009 Share #5 Posted September 9, 2009 Don't know if its misleading yet.. guess we might know in the morning. though it would be rather bold to specifically name rain and dust, unless they felt rather comfortable letting us put the camera in rain and dust. . reddawn Posted September 9, 2009 Share #6 Posted September 9, 2009 On page 21, under TOUGH, the brochure states: "People who take photography seriously usually live their lives at the edge; in searing heat or bitter cold, pouring rain or swirling dust. The M is built to be consistent, dependable and tough under almost any imaginable condtions". I guess we can now make photos in the rain? I would not be the first to try if i buy one Though if it says "The M", (i haven't seen that leaked brochure) then surely they might be referring to the M line generically, and not specifically stating the M9 as being weather sealed? Given where we live, you and I would do better with a fireproof M9!
hx911 Posted September 9, 2009 Share #8 Posted September 9, 2009 come on - you've never taken a picture in the rain with your m8???
arthury Posted September 9, 2009 Share #9 Posted September 9, 2009 Yes, for the photojournalists, it has to be bullet-proof or IED-proof.
psss Posted September 9, 2009 Share #10 Posted September 9, 2009 if you read it carefully (without reading into it... ) it refers to the m system in general...so i would not expect any difference to the m8.....
Bo_Lorentzen Posted September 9, 2009 Share #11 Posted September 9, 2009 Actually, my 8 have been rained on, pretty soaked too, but got wiped after a few minutes, I was rather concerned remembering others post about bricking their M's that way. sm23221, you in LA tomorrow.? (though that fireproof part, Im pretty sure the camera does more fire than I do.) .
psss Posted September 9, 2009 Share #12 Posted September 9, 2009 without the little lcd screen on the top, the m9 should be more rain friendly....a little bit at least...
giordano Posted September 9, 2009 Share #13 Posted September 9, 2009 People who take photography seriously usually live their lives at the edge Does anyone here believe this is true as a general statement about people who take photography seriously (whatever that means)? in searing heat or bitter cold, pouring rain or swirling dust. The M is built to be consistent, dependable and tough under almost any imaginable condtions. Likewise. I can imagine many conditions in which an M would not be consistent or dependable - and so can Leica, or the M8 and M9 specs wouldn't state "Operating range: 0C to 40C", which rules out both the searing heat and the bitter cold. In short these two sentences are pure marketing-speak, intended to make us feel good but without any real meaning. Fair enough: it's a brochure, not a contract. jaapv Posted September 9, 2009 Share #14 Posted September 9, 2009 Misleading advertisement then? The Canon 5D is not weathersealed, yet has a number of seals installed to make it more weathertight. It could be Leica has tightened up the sealing in a similar manner.
eldelbo Posted September 9, 2009 Share #15 Posted September 9, 2009 On page 21, under TOUGH, the brochure states: "People who take photography seriously usually live their lives at the edge; in searing heat or bitter cold, pouring rain or swirling dust. The M is built to be consistent, dependable and tough under almost any imaginable condtions". I guess we can now make photos in the rain? I did spot that one. I've used my M8 successfully in pretty heavy rain with no problems (pretty much a requirement in the West of Scotland where we've had something like 55 successive days with rain this summer), but it would be very appealing to have something a wee bit more deliberately robust. That and better high ISO performance to deal with the same climactic issues...
Ru_di Posted September 9, 2009 Share #16 Posted September 9, 2009 ...just wait what the M9 manual will say...thats what will count towards the usebillity.... it is not weather sealed......
epand56 Posted September 9, 2009 Share #17 Posted September 9, 2009 It look to me like an M8 with M9 stated on the front and some changes in the electronics. And well, the FF sensor of course. But it looks like it's just weather tight as the M8 is
KevinA Posted September 9, 2009 Share #18 Posted September 9, 2009 Does anyone here believe this is true as a general statement about people who take photography seriously (whatever that means)? ) Life is always a near death experience! rob_x2004 Posted September 10, 2009 Share #19 Posted September 10, 2009 So without wading through all the drivel, is it sealed at all now or same as M8/8.2? Surely Norton will have pulled his apart in a fit of curiosity by now.
sm23221 Posted September 10, 2009 Author Share #20 Posted September 10, 2009 The more I think about it the more I think it's advertising hype - on the edge of being unethical at best. I love Leica products but it seems the marketing dept is chock full of semantics in an effort to make perceived claims. This was also done in the description of the Noctilux.
