manolo Posted September 7, 2009 Share #21 Posted September 7, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I think there's going to be even more work to do, testing lenses on FF instead of 1.33 sensors. Many of us, when we shifted from Canon's 1.5 crop factor to FF 5D, found that Canon's lenses, not the sensor, were now a major limiting condition – especially in corner sharpness. Now this comes up all over again for CV & even Leica lenses on M9 - with soft corners no longer conveniently hidden by the crop factor. I'm reminded that when I used an M4, I tried a 28mm CV & found its corners disturbingly mushy. Now that I've been working with the M8's 1.33 crop factor, I've felt free to use older Leitz lenses, & also CVs. I wonder how the CV line is going to look if/when retested on full-frame digital. Kirk I agree that understanding how old lenses work on the ffdigital will be very important to know the M8 value for me. (&M9)
Advertisement Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 Hi manolo, Take a look here Sean's been busy.... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
johnbuckley Posted September 7, 2009 Share #22 Posted September 7, 2009 I started this thread about Sean's upcoming reviews...and I agree his reviews rank among the very best...but actually I think his essays on art and photography are the heart and soul of his site, and the ideas and philosophies contained in those, along with his own practical experience as a photographer, help provide the basis for his insights as a reviewer. Jeff I completely agree. And since this is a thread likely to be read by Sean, allow me to say that Sean's essays on street photography have been some of the best, most immediate instructional writing on the topic that I've read. We of course love, and depend on, Sean's review of Leica gear. His writing on photography per se is also valuable, and worth the (not very expensive) subscription price. Thank you (especially for the comments on the essays) and thanks to all of you who have commented on the site in posts above. Later this year my life should slow down a bit and I want to get back to writing more about photography itself (beyond equipment). I second that wholeheartedly: Sean site is a beacon of sanity and good common sense in these times of digital maelstrom. I always feel instructed and educated after a new review! ljclark Posted September 8, 2009 Share #26 Posted September 8, 2009 I logged onto Sean's site on Monday -- to double check on some tests because I was recommending the site to a friend. Turned out that my subscription had expired on the 4th. Yikes! Then I read this cryptic text way down the home page: "If you are hoping to read the new articles that appear here on September 9 and 10 please subscribe or renew your subscription now. There is likely to be a large volume of new subscriptions on those days and some inevitably may get delayed due to PayPal problems (which we have no control over)." Phew...Renewed just in time. gravastar Posted September 8, 2009 Share #29 Posted September 8, 2009 There's a link at the very bottom of the ReidReviews page. Thanks for that . I'd been logging in and looking for a link. It's only visible if you haven't logged in. Bob.
fingerprinz Posted September 8, 2009 Share #30 Posted September 8, 2009 Absolutely, Bo. I think that Sean Reid's reviews are the best available anywhere, whether on the web or in the printed media and well worth the $30+ subscription fee, particularly when you consider how much you spend on cameras lenses. Couldn't agree more. But still, I'm missing more reviews. Don't know if I will subscribe another year, if I don't get more content for the money. sean_reid Posted September 8, 2009 Share #31 Posted September 8, 2009 Couldn't agree more. But still, I'm missing more reviews. Don't know if I will subscribe another year, if I don't get more content for the money. "More content for the money..." That's always a personal choice and I understand. I don't know if I'll exist for another year unless I start getting more sleep. Started work at 2:30 AM this morning. Unlike some reviewers, I also have responsibilities to photography clients and so I have to balance the various parts of my life, including writing. Lately sleep and time with my family have been the losers in the equation so I'm certainly not going to push my schedule any harder than I do already. Content for RR takes a lot of time to create and it has to fit in with everything else. RR is not a blog, of course, so you might want to also look at getting a daily fix of Michael Johnston's TOP. Perhaps you understand and can relate this to your own professional life. Cheers,

Double Negative Posted September 8, 2009 Share #33 Posted September 8, 2009 As soon as Sean's site is free, I'll read it.
Guest malland Posted September 8, 2009 Share #34 Posted September 8, 2009 As soon as Sean's site is free, I'll read it. Charming! The smiley doesn't do it — you've written the equivalent of, "I'm a cheapskate". Maybe you should change your screen name to "Triple Negative". So, you like to get something for nothing or think everything on the web should be free? Do you even have a clue how much work, how much of a slog, it is to do the tests for the type of thorough and authoritative reviews that Sean writes. I can't see anyone putting in this type of work and not be remunerated for it, Sure, independently wealthy people can do this for a charity or a good cause — but camera and lens reviews? —Mitch/Potomac, MD Bangkok Hysteria©: Book Project
sean_reid Posted September 8, 2009 Share #35 Posted September 8, 2009 As soon as Sean's site is free, I'll read it. I completely understand but that probably won't happen in my life time. There's no way I'd have time to do this if it wasn't a professional responsibility and I will not accept advertising. So subscription web magazine it is. Fortunately there's lots of free information on the web. Cheers,
wilfredo Posted September 8, 2009 Share #36 Posted September 8, 2009 This will be a worthy review. Given the volume of clutter already surrounding the M9, something grounded will be welcomed.
footnoteblog Posted September 8, 2009 Share #37 Posted September 8, 2009 Well, Mitch got a little ornery there towards Double Negative, but I have to concur; Sean's reviews will really help you in digital rangefinder equipment purchases and the given insight is definitely not all free and available, and more conveniently (and perhaps the real value here), the information is in one place. For thirty bucks, it's worth the price of admission before you jump in on a $300 CV all the way up to a $4000 Leica. He's been awful polite and even offered up free advice here. I've been on this forum since the days of the Digilux 1 and long before the creation of RR. I don't summarize my RR work on the forums but I do try to answer questions when I can and over the years I'm hoping I've added a lot of free advice and information to this site. Some of it might even be useful. <G> Cheers, Sean
Guest malland Posted September 8, 2009 Share #39 Posted September 8, 2009 Well, Mitch got a little ornery there towards Double Negative...You said it. It was the smiley that pulled my trigger; that, and I've seen so many discussions elsewhere in which people want to get something valuable for nothing and therefore couldn't resist calling a spade a spade. —Mitch/Potomac, MD Bangkok Hysteria©: Book Project
papimuzo Posted September 8, 2009 Share #40 Posted September 8, 2009 All have been said already; I just want to confirm that -as a regular subscriber- all my M8 equipement was decided (economically!) with the Sean's advice, from CV lens to John LTM adaptors throught JFI profiles for BW on Capture 1. Not talking about his sensible assays on taking pictures in the field. Now that he will get and use some M9 his M8 could go to his daughter... who made already splendid report. Go on Sean, we are anxious to receive your tests and opinions before emptying our wallets...
