leicanet Posted September 6, 2009 Share #1 Â Posted September 6, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Leica 50mm 1.4 Summilux-R late version (E60) on Canon 5D Â Â Hello everybody, I am a Leica M user but recently I ended up getting a Canon 5D body combined with an APO Macro Elmarit-R 100/2.8 to use for macro photography . I have been so amazed at the results of the 100/2.8 Leica R lens that I have decided to get a couple more of faster R lenses. No wide angles yet, I think I'd still rather use my M wides. So I also bought a Summilux-R 1:1.4/80mm and again, beautiful results, (although I find the 80mm 'Lux very tricky to focus correctly and I am struggling to get to grip with the issue). Anyway, both the 100/2.8 and the 80/1.4 work fine on the Canon 5D by the means of the very good Camera Quest/Kindai adapter but I was very naive and I did not know -and only found out some time later when browsing the internet- that some R lenses could incur in a mirror problem when used on the 5D. Luckily, I had no problem at all so far, the 80/1.4 'Lux also works fine and without removing the back shroud. But I have now also acquired a Summilux-R 1:1.4/50mm (ROM) later version E60 and, after reading some reviews/posts and links about its compatibility with the 5D, I got worried about using it on the Canon camera. I still cannot find a definitive confirmation that the lens will work without problems on the 5D. Can anyone confirm this or advice on the matter? I don't know if I should just "try my luck" once again mounting the lens on the 5D and just start shooting but I am now concerned that, should luck suddenly fail me, I am going to scratch the lens back element...? Any advice/tips much appreciated, thank you all. Â Â Many thanks in advance.

psquared Posted September 6, 2009 Share #2 Â Posted September 6, 2009 There is a rubber shroud on the back element that you can just pull off with tweezers. This should allow trouble-free use of the lens on a 5D. Otherwise the mirror may catch the shroud and hang. Even if the mirror should catch the shroud, it shouldn't harm the lens or the mirror. The manufacturing tolerances of the 5D is such that some may allow the lens to be used without modification.
leicanet Posted September 7, 2009 Author Share #3 Â Posted September 7, 2009 Hi Peter, and many thanks for your advice. However, there is no rubber shroud on the back element of this lens...
Michiel Fokkema Posted September 7, 2009 Share #4 Â Posted September 7, 2009 You can just try it. If the mirror hangs you get an error. After removing the lens all will be okay. My E55 summi has no problems at all. I use the EE-S focusing screen which works must better with manual focusing. Â Cheers, Â Michiel Fokkema
lct Posted September 7, 2009 Share #5 Â Posted September 7, 2009 ...there is no rubber shroud on the back element of this lens... Never used this lens but it seems that there is a rubber ring to remove from the rear element (here with a Leitax mount): Â
leicanet Posted September 7, 2009 Author Share #6 Â Posted September 7, 2009 Well, I tried the lens on the 5D without removing anything (by the way, thanks for the tip lct). It worked at first, at close distance. But then I have noticed a sort of unusual "noise" when playing with the focussing mount...so I tried to take a shot at infinity and it was then that the mirror caught the back of the lens and the camera got "stuck", error. I will now try and remove the rubber shroud and see what happens...
Jamie Roberts Posted September 8, 2009 Share #7 Â Posted September 8, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) So very strange... Â I used my 50 R Lux (latest version) on my 1ds2 and 5d without any issues whatsoever.
ZoomP Posted September 11, 2009 Share #8 Â Posted September 11, 2009 So very strange... Â I used my 50 R Lux (latest version) on my 1ds2 and 5d without any issues whatsoever. Â Â Think the issue comes when you try to focus till infinity. I am using E55 version of the Lux and crons. No issue even on my 35 Cron-R.
