Not meaning to be disrespectful, but is anyone posting in this thread really serious? For all I can see, it does not matter if the camera is purple with green and pink dots or stripes as long as it gets the job done. What did I miss?

Probably the last 55 years of Leica successfully offering their cameras in chrome and black ?

I can understand someone that would not buy a M9 because it is pink or white. But not buying it because it is not chrome, black or anthracite really puts its users into the fondlers category. :D

My one was a demi-joke : I really do not intend to buy M9 for at least 6-12 months for a number of reasons (love my M8, prefer to wait feedbacks, money won't be few) ... the absence of chrome adds a small bit... :p

Personally speaking don't care so much about it, except for the fact that I try to keep all my equipment in tip top condition, (presently all MF) despite the fact that I use it everywhere... I am just not a fan of this 'pseudo antique' effect that Leica has built in to much of the M series, (by this I mean the deliberate use of paint that wears down faster than it needs to). Scratches and bumps are part of the game in photography equipment but I don't need/want this in my view fake and unnecessary effect. Just want something tough that will also look OK after 10 years. The color that is tougher will have my final vote.

But you are right in the end: who cares as long as the pictures come out as I want!

Ciao,

Tadeyev

Hope you don't apply the same standard to your clothes when you get dressed in the morning, It might give you a bit of a clown look. Then again it might work with your purple with pink dots or striped M9.:D I still prefer Chrome but thats just fondler me

I definitely find that my Chrome M's have been far more resistant to marking and scratching. That's the practical perspective, plus aesthetically I find the retro look is appealing too. As we all know though, they all take the same pictures.

Imagine your car dealer, telling you the same: "At least it's a car to get from A to B, it doesn't matter if black or silver." :D

I'm sorry but I hate it when people do the self-righteous preaching thing about how unimportant it is how a camera looks, and how much more serious they are about photography because they don't care if it's black or pink with green spots.

Well done for being above such trivialities! You are by definition much better people than I am because I do care about the design and appearance of everything in my life. You get a medal okay?

I'm hoping that Leica reconsider and introduce a chrome version. Until then I'll use the absence of one as a disincentive to spend even more horrific amounts of money on a camera I don't really need.

Well, yes, that's a reasonable answer. However: given that you had to have a camera, would it really matter if it was all black, black and chromium or another coloring scheme not entirely inconsistent with serious photography?

Serious photography can be done with black cameras only - serious photography is a kind of cerebral funeral.

Ah, then I guess you also don't mind if your brand new car has some scratches and a few minor dents, hmm? Hey, it still gets the job done!

I find some of these threads tantamount to my own cerebral funeral ...

I do agree. Silver and black are both convenient for funeral. Anthracite is more apropriate for Götterdämmerung.

Andy, I do not own a car since the public transportation system gets the job done where I live, most of the time.

However, I did buy a second hand D-Lux 3 with some scratches and a minor dent or two. It is a great relief not to have to bother where I put it in my briefcase, and the cost of the purchase was quite attractive.

The M4 I bought had a seriously scratched base plate. Not being pressed for time, I bought an unscratched base plate for a modest amount and am therefore ready to sell it to more discriminating people when and if the occasion calls for that. The quality of the pictures I make with that body remains the same. Not brilliant, I'm afraid.

Serious? Sure, in addition to what others have said, the color and looks can certainly have an effect in the (living) subject. I like a black matte and as small as possible camera to get the least attention for candid stuff.

Maybe portraitists can comment, does a more noticeable camera help a little bit to get/keep the subjects attention?
