9 reasons not to buy an M9 on 9/9/09

Back to the subject. Patrick's reasons were of course not prognostications. They were hypothetical. Some of them may come out true, but we hope not. So here are MY hypothetical reasons for not buying a M9:

-- It is not full frame.

-- It is not rainproof.

-- It has no 'system' flash connection independent of the accessory shoe.

-- It is larger than a M8 (a brick instead of a half-brick)

-- Its finder magnfication is less than .72x

-- It will have the grating, creepy M8 shutter release, that makes an old target shooter go bananas.

-- The Swedish Tax Authority notifies me that I owe them SEK 60,000 more than I do already owe them.

I do fear that at least one and probably three of these reasons may materialize. So I will consider carefully before confirming my pre-order.

Patrick, for such a low volume 'adventurer' to this forum, you seem very well informed. Please share your source of inform(ous)ation. If stating blatant misinformation is your attempt at humour, it is not working, at least in this quarter and I suspect others. Note that this is an International Forum where cultures and ideas vary widely such that what is acceptable to some can be offensive to others. We are all guilty of such transgressions at times, (self included), but caution, especially from a newby, is good counsel until you get the measure of the forum.

Let me just say that by flipping nearly ALL your points will bring you much closer to the real M9 which leaves a very strong incentive to rush out and buy one if you can and if your photographic needs are such that your work will benefit from the dramatic improvement beyond the already very accomplished M8.

Erl, I think your sarcasm detector has jammed. Are you using one of the Japanese imports? The Australian-made ones are much more reliable.

John, the answer is no, I am using a German built model. ;)

Trouble is, I can't read the manual.

Note the use of smileys to emphasize the written intent, as opposed to a spoken interpretation.

I think, no, I actually know, this where a lot of net misunderstanding arises. Hense my job............... and of course I get fooled by it too, sometimes. I hope you get the drift of my position.

Got them this way as well.

I won't be buying the new M body if:

1. I prefer my Epson pics

2. The new body is not full frame

3. Vignetting cannot be adjusted properly

4. Filters are needed to work properly

5. Magnifiers are needed to focus properly

6. Moiré cannot be adjusted properly

7. Shutter noise is significantly louder than film M's

8. Chimping is needed during shootings

9. Burst mode is slower than M8's

10. Body size is bigger than Epson's

I do indeed. Overall the mods do a very good job, and despite the occasional pouting and flouncing and ill-temper from others this is a much better place than most of the internet forums I've been to.

Hello Erl,

I'll try to say a couple of things and I won't use any sarcasm.

I saw your product and I think it looks interesting. I'm sure a lot of work went into it.

I am positive you gave more love and effort to this gadget than any one at leica who

had to work on those Hermes and Sultan of wherever editions.

M8 is a good camera. I own one. The reason I use it is because it works like an M and it feels like an M. It's comfortable.

In fact it is not an M, it's only named after it. It's not good for night shots and it's not quite.

We may all like different things about these cameras. I only wanted to learn people's expectations from M9 and I didn't want to make it boring.

I'm making fun of the ceo's at leica only because I simply think they deserve it.

Nothing that they've done so far is groundbreaking and they want us to believe they are.

They don't need bullshit me because I'm going to buy the damn thing even if they fix only

one of the faults out of those I've mentioned.

As someone who's work depends on these cameras I would urge you to be more critical

of these cameras, their sales i parallel to yours are not affected by these forums, they are effected by websites where they are reviewed and those guys can be really tough.

Patrick, first let me attempt to explain that possibly I misunderstood your original 'drift'. I took it that you were being critical of the M9 before facts are known. The time to be critical is when you know them. If your post was intended to be humerous, I missed the point.

Second, my livelyhood, like yours, depends on these cameras too, so I also need them to be up to the mark. Currently I work with two M8's and am very interested in what the M9 will have to offer. If the improvements do not measure up to the cost, I will not buy it. My M8's are doing a great job of work and can continue. Improved high ISO and FF are the attractions for me, but I am currently living well and will not die without the new features. Cost will be be the swinging factor I suspect.

I do find the M8 good for night shots and low light stage work, but I agree with you, it is not quiet. Even the M6 & M7 are noisy compared to modern P&S but their other advantages are in a league of their own.

I hope we are closer to agreement now. :)

Q : How many lightbulps does it take to appear above a CEO’s head before he can go out with his leica at night ?

A: 9! 9! 9! You forgot the part where you say screw!

It seems that four of them (those with an asterisk) have already been confirmed! Ouch!

  • 2 weeks later...

Today I received the september/october issue of the LFI. I was pretty much surprised to see the M9 announced, me not being very active lately on this forum. I don't want to get into the debate if the M9 is 'a big leap forward' in a technical sense. I guess it will be comfortable to have a FF because I can't get used to the crop-factor and the inaccuracy of the framelines compared to the actual pictures. What really pisses me off, and thats the 10th reason in my opinion, is the pricing strategy which is used by 'our friends' in Solms. Introducing the M8 at around € 4000,-- then raising it around 5k, then introducing some quirky features as sahpire glass and a silent shutter (does these things make any better pictures?) at the loony costs of 1.2k, lowering the price of a 'bare' M8 6 months after the M8.2 is introduced to 'discountlevel' (3k), keeping the price of the M8.2 around 5k and now introducing the M9 at € 5.5k. Shamelessly exploiting the brand and its 'heritage'. Some brilliant marketing? I think is stretching customerloyalty to the max. Mine snapped already.

Well Robert, since you have "not been very active on the forum lately",(your words) I am amazed that this is your first post. What other name have you been using previously.

To come in here blazingly critical on your "1st post" is not a friendly attitude, especially when there is a mountain of evidence to the contrary of your expressed opinion. You could well be taken as a troll so I will start looking under a few bridges for more signs of your activity.

That is quite a first and only post from you so far Robert.

Do you feel better now after your rant?
