Panasonic tipping Leica's hand...

When I went to the Panasonic website to read about their new micro 4/3's camera I saw that there was a NEW LEICA DG Macro Elmarit 45mm lens micro 4/3's. Not 4/3's but MICRO 4/3s. No mention that it needs to use a micro 4/3s adapter. On the lead page for the lenses for the GF1 there is a red flagged NEW next to the image next to Panasonic's new 20mm f1.7 lens.

While I could be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay off, personally I think it provides a window as to what Leica may announce next week.

I don't think it's way off, when someone opens a window, looks out and sees how different his neighbourhood is.

I dunno Andy. Like I said I was reading the X site (who shall remain nameless henceforth) and saw the "New" lens and began to wonder.

Personally with the S1 off and running and the M8 due for an update either as a 'full frame' or new improved sensor (although I'd venture into the full frame camp) or, Leitz tradition of being the standard bearer of a true 'pocketable' camera of seriously high resolution in their stable I wouldn't be surprised if either a 4/3's or micro 4/3's product with interchangeable lenses (with existing optics perhaps) was revealed. The sensor and software techology are such that superb images can be made now in a surprisingly compact configuration.

Leica help Panasonic with lenses under their current agreement. Some of those lenses can be branded 'Leica' (as explained by Andy Piper (Adan) in other threads) if they meet the terms of that agreement, and others are branded 'Lumix' if they don't. This information came from a Panasonic briefing at PMA earlier in the year.

Whilst Leica said back at the Hessenpark briefing that they had no interest M4/3rds cameras, they also said that they 'may' offer M4/3rds lenses. They have also said (see the recent financial report) that they would continue with existing and new partnerships.

So, I don't think too much should be read into the GF1 and it's lenses necessarily. On the other hand, Leica could spring a surprise again........
