There are a number of early 1940's Leica Summitar lenses around with an extra number prefixed with "Re." Does anybody know what this means? There may be indications that it means (illogically perhaps) the Reichssicherheitshauptamt, a.k.a. Gestapo, but I have seen nothing authoritative.

Hi, Lars

Here are pictures (general + detail) of a MOOLY c-K engraved "Re.371104". Sorry for the low quality, but I only retrieved a "scratched" negative. This piece went briefly through my Fontenelle Collection in the mid-eighties, and I couldn't resist a golden offer by an Italian collector. As for the meaning of the special engraving, I have always been - and still am perplexed. I do not remember having seen any explanation for it. Let's hope someone who knows will see this thread and provide us with the solution.

Lager displays some items with the Re. xxxxxx engraving in items of the 40's ... he generally describes it as a Government/Military engraving, which is the natural explanation ("Reichsomething... maybe better not to remember some Government Agencies which surely had to take records of some poor people).

Exactly my thinking Luigi (those would be lenses out of Hell) but it would be satisfying to know.

Laney does also show a Summitar with a Re number, but he has mislabeled it as a collapsible Summicron! Never believe what you read in Leica books until you have double-checked it.
