blakey Posted August 29, 2009 Share #1 Posted August 29, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have had my lens almost a week now and got out last night to have a local play. Well everyone is correct about the Nocton quailty vs Zeiss vs Leica. But this little baby really competes. I was not sure at first but last night I was so impressed with the quality I cannot see how a 24mm Leica can be 2 x better or more. Just my opinion I know and whilst I would always want to own a Leica and perhaps one day will, I cannot justify the difference in this focal length. I was truly impressed. Now the other caveat is that I have so far only owned the Summarit's. So I am not in Noctilux, or Summilux country so please bare that in mind against my comments. Diminishing returns is a concern for a camera I dot not earn my living from, hence my position. Anyway hope you enjoy the experience. Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 Hi blakey, Take a look here The Zeiss 25mm 2.8 is a contender. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
delander † Posted August 29, 2009 Share #2 Posted August 29, 2009 To be honest the crop does not look that sharp. Of course that could be caused by a lot of factors, was it hand held in low light? Jeff
jonoslack Posted August 29, 2009 Share #3 Posted August 29, 2009 Hi Blakey Looks pretty good to me - IMHO it's one of the sharpest lenses I've owned, I really like it on the M8. Don't write off those summarits either - sure, they aren't as good at f2:) But my little 35 is used a great deal - much more than some other cron's and luxes. delander † Posted August 29, 2009 Share #4 Posted August 29, 2009 One from the 28 elmarit. I know this is all very subjective. Jeff Welcome, dear visitor! lars_bergquist Posted August 29, 2009 Share #5 Posted August 29, 2009 The Biogon holds its own against the Elmarit. It is probably the best buy in the entire ZM lineup. The 18mm is also damn good and has a sensible mount/filter design. I see lots of evidence of confused thinking in the Leica wide angle department. Get a grip on yourselves if you want me to shell out money. The old cost-benefit man

Main differences IMO are warmer colors and much better build quality for the Elmarit.

Diminishing returns is a concern for a camera I dot not earn my living from, hence my position. Anyway hope you enjoy the experience. What impresses me about this shot is not the sharpness, but the tones. Zeiss lenses seem to have an uncanny ability to make things look more three dimensional. I suggest you don't lose any sleep over not having a Leica lens, I only have three lenses for use with my M8 and only one is a Leica (35mm Summicron ASPH). When I bought the Summicron 4 years ago I only paid $1200.00 for it on Ebay in virtually brand new condition. Now this lens has become prohibitive like all the other Leica glass, although nothing in comparison to the 50mm Noctilux. Enjoy the lens, you obviously have a good eye and will get lot's of milleage out of it. On the M8, it is a winner. I just purchased an 85mm Zeiss for my other camera and tried it out yesterday for the first time. I'm very pleased (here's a shot). Zeiss is a great alternative lens whether on a Leica or any other camera. Welcome, dear visitor! blakey Posted August 31, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted August 31, 2009 Guys thanks for the feeback, I must say I am not used to posting photos on the web and the processing to get them looking right at present is a little time consuming given the day job. However, I will say that once posted the images were very fuzzy and nothing like the originals i see on screen. I would like to impress more so if some one can give me a process for Photoshop or aperature i can use to get it looking right at 100% crop then I will give it a go sometime next week. thanks for looking and the comments. earleygallery Posted August 31, 2009 Share #9 Posted August 31, 2009 Why waste money on the Zeiss, I'm more than happy with my 25 f4 Skopar This is a FF 35mm image, and its sharp into the corners. OK I concede that the Zeiss is a stop faster.... Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! LotharZhou Posted September 1, 2009 Share #10 Posted September 1, 2009 having owned the lens for nearly 3 weeks, agree everything you said, it's sharp, it's rendition in low light feels more contrast between warm and cold colours, my favorite lens on the M8. Double Negative Posted September 2, 2009 Share #11 Posted September 2, 2009 I have the 2,8/25 Biogon ZM and it's easily my favorite, most used lens on both the M8 and Ikon. It's ridiculously sharp and all the lens characteristics you care to throw out there - sharpness, contrast, saturation, distortion... Are all at the top of their game. My ONLY gripe would be that it's not brighter. But that hasn't stopped me yet and I've shot in some dark conditions. Sure I could get the 1,4/24 Summilux... For an extra five grand! Congrats on a truly excellent lens - enjoy!
footnoteblog Posted September 3, 2009 Share #12 Posted September 3, 2009 So the Zeiss has to have a new flange replaced to code, or ...? I'm totally unclear on this issue.
lars_bergquist Posted September 3, 2009 Share #13 Posted September 3, 2009 Zeiss are phasing in the new type 'hand-codable' flange. They will supply the lens on order with a bayonet that codes for the right frames. Check with your dealer. The new flange too can of course be sent away to be machined for permanent six-bit coding. I did prefer that, and John Milich did the job. Zeiss cannot do that because they would be eaten alive by German company lawyers, a deadlier species than even the American ones. footnoteblog Posted September 4, 2009 Share #14 Posted September 4, 2009 What about the framelines; popflash has some listings that are more compatible (?) with the M8? Thanks!
