M9 first batch flaw predictions

Despite its imperfections, my M8 has been the best money I've spent on a digital camera, providing excellent results and reliable service for nearly three years now. I'd be satisfied with the same sort of performance from a new camera.

I hope the next digital M can be as good as the M8 has been.

Later,

Clyde

Leica have hearned a huge amount about how to build Digital Ms over the last 4 years. You only have to look at the quality of the cameras now compared to the first ones. Have you noticed how posts about back-focussing have almost disappeared? Leica have refined their build and alignment processes and that for me was the benefit of doing the shutter upgrade - to force the camera through the new processes.

I expect the M9 will be a big step forwards - it won't be bug free and there will be firmware updates - but it will be fine.

Couldn't agree more with Clyde, me too, feel like my M8 will accompany me (as main or as a backup) 10 years more without any problem.

This is true comparing to some other camera that after 2 years being so left out.

What will you brave souls who grab that first batch expect. IR magenta, back focus, freezing up, alignment issues who knows what else... Care to guess??

Glass half empty is it?

I'm with Mark on this one.

My guess..ZERO

Hi Steve

What a splendid optimist you are!

Somebody is bound to find Something to cause a stir. But I agree - operationally and practically speaking I think they will have it pretty much right.

As for firmware updates - they will certainly come - but that's great - after the first few changes with the M8, later firmware updates contained enhancements rather than fixes, something most manufacturers definitely do not to.

If there are any problems then I sincerely hope that they are different to those found with the M8 over time. If they repeat a SNAFU then I don't think people will be very tolerant.

Btw, my M8/M8.2 have been fabulous without ANY issues for over a year now. Heck, Leica NJ even turned around my M8 upgrades faster than promised and even the controls felt better after the upgrade.

This post was meant to be humorous. The whole magenta issue is what I was pointing to. My M8 is one of the early ones. It has and still performes flawlessly. I will miss her one day when I sell her in favor of the M9. I'll never be able to afford both. However my completly messed up RD-1 will always be by my side.

No camera is immune from first batch problems. These are complex products based on rapidly advancing technology. The Canon MkIIIDs had massive autofocus problems that Canon had real trouble fixing. A friend bought one of the first Canon 5DMkIII and it has problems with green shadows (so much for its great high ISO performance). I bought my daughter a Nikon D5000 last month, and it is being recalled for on/off switch problems. If you regularly visit dpreview.com, you'll see all the recalls and firmware updates. The M8 had its issues, but it is not unique. I expect the M9 to have problems too, but Dale Photo will get my order as soon as they are willing to take it. Technology marches on in a digital world.

None of the above, but plenty of expert advice from forum members!

What we can be sure of is all those buying a M9 will experience a difference to the M8 which we will find frustrating in the beginning. It has been so with all the digital cameras I have bought, since my first Canon 1Ds and upwards, and with my M8 included.

The first weeks and months after launch we will hear a lot of sighs and frustrated talk on these pages. Before we will gradually find out how to make the new camera perform at it's best. Then we will gradually see 'how good Leica lenses are'. - The opposite has been the case with Canon. The better the camera they have launched the more they have revealed obvious flaws in their lens line up.
