ljclark Posted August 28, 2009 Share #1 Posted August 28, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just curious... Tim? Or Tim spotters? Any recent word on the M8 Base Plate Project? I've been saving my pennies, but it's been quiet on that front for awhile. (On the other hand, maybe Leica got smart, decided to bring it onboard for the M9, and laid an NDA on Tim.) Steve Ash Posted August 28, 2009 Share #2 Posted August 28, 2009 I actually hope that Leica is not picking up this idea. I would prefer to see more weather protection in a future M. The proposed design would lead to much more sealing problems. Further I do not quite understand the problem with the actual design. With 8 GB cards you can shoot over 400 images. Change battery and sd card at the same time in the range of 350 to 400 images when ever it is convenient for your during your shooting session. Just do not wait until the battery is empty or the sd card is full but change both in advance Regards Steve
papimuzo Posted August 28, 2009 Share #3 Posted August 28, 2009 I second your question JlClark, and hope that Tim is still following this thread. but he (and me....) is certainly wondering about M9 exact dimensions!

bradhusick Posted August 28, 2009 Share #5 Posted August 28, 2009 I love Tim's products but I just bought one of Luigi's new baseplates with flaps for both the battery and SD cards. The flaps are held in place with tiny magnets. It's a simple design that really works. He also doubled the thickness of the metal at the point where the metal tab extends from the body. Good thinking. It's not cheap, but I like it.
ljclark Posted August 29, 2009 Author Share #6 Posted August 29, 2009 I just bought one of Luigi's new baseplates with flaps for both the battery and SD cards. I hadn't seen the M-Mate2 with both doors. I prefer Tim's design, but Luigi's actually exists. Luigi's price isn't all that high -- less that I would have expected to pay for Tim's. Might be worth a try...
Bo_Lorentzen Posted August 30, 2009 Share #7 Posted August 30, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Personally Im more interested in the Mplate with 1 door for popping the SD card in and out... Tim's design is much nicer, but also significantly more ambitious. with moving parts which need to end up with perfect tolerances for a proper fit. Lugis design is easier to realize as there is really no critical surface matches on that piece.
chris_tribble Posted August 30, 2009 Share #8 Posted August 30, 2009 Anyone willing to place bets on whether there will have been any radical change to the baseplate in the mooted M9?
adli Posted August 30, 2009 Share #9 Posted August 30, 2009 Anyone willing to place bets on whether there will have been any radical change to the baseplate in the mooted M9? My bet is that Leica will keep it simple and that the M9 will have the traditionally base plate. It is lightweight and failsafe.
lxlim Posted August 30, 2009 Share #10 Posted August 30, 2009 I sort of like the S2's battery compartment. However, I don't recall how the cards are inserted for the S2.
ljclark Posted August 30, 2009 Author Share #11 Posted August 30, 2009 Anyone willing to place bets on whether there will have been any radical change to the baseplate in the mooted M9? Whenever the M9 comes out, I hope Leica moves on to something a bit more contemporary and durable. And while there appear to have been only a few instances, the fact that the base plate has failed on some M8s is not comforting. How many digital cameras being sold now, or in the past 5 years, required you to completely remove a piece of the camera in order to change memory cards? For that matter, how many digital cameras require full removal of a piece to change the battery? Direct access doors for the battery and SD card could actually be more weather resistant than the current design.
