ola.fiske Posted August 27, 2009 Share #1 Posted August 27, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, Except for posting some pics, I am newcomer in this forum. I got my M8.2 in january this year and have a lot to learn ahead. But I love use my camera so much I have problems to sleep at night:D. Before my M8.2 I have shooting with simple pocketcameras. The coming weekend I have the opportunity to lend a 21mm Elmarit to use with my M8.2. But there is no uv/ir filter on it. Am I right if I have understand from the forum that ir-filter only influence on color pics, and will be no problem when "monocromin" them og shouting jpgs B/W? Advertisement Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 Hi ola.fiske, Take a look here M8.2 and Elmarit 21mm without uv/ir filter. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
cesare Posted August 27, 2009 Share #2 Posted August 27, 2009 Hi, I use a M8 which was upgraded and I'm very fond of it. My 21/2.8 pre-asph has been coded in Solms and I use it only an UV filter in front. Frankly I don't miss a uv/ir cut filter , and no serious problem have I got so far either shooting color in raw. Of course converting files in BW using photoshop is a joy. Enjoy your experience with 21 mm. Regards. Cesare
jaapv Posted August 27, 2009 Share #3 Posted August 27, 2009 Shoot DNG and if you don't like the colours you can always convert to B&W.
noah_addis Posted August 27, 2009 Share #4 Posted August 27, 2009 You should have no problems for B&W photos, some M8 users even say they get better B&W results from not using the filter. I have a 21 ASPH and it's an amazing lens. If you have a chance to borrow one I would say go for it, if only to see if you like the focal length. In certain situations you might even be able to get decent color without problems without the filter, though I do tend to leave the filter on at all times. But depending on what you're shooting you may get good results. I'd do as others have suggested and shoot DNG. That gives you the most options for processing later. I always shoot DNG, though sometimes I go DNG+JPEG and set the JPEG for a B&W preview. But I only use the JPEGs for editing, my final photographs always come from the DNG. With a 21 you'd need a 28mm viewfinder on the M8 for accurate framing. Of course you can go without, but it helps. Have fun!
