Etruscello Posted August 25, 2009 Share #1 Posted August 25, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm less concerned about the possibility of an M9, and much more excited about the potentiality of a new type of Leica: an EVF for M-mount lenses. Having used my M lenses on a Lumix G1 (and GH1), I see the great value of this approach for Leica M photography. The G1 has a 2x crop factor. I'd rather dream about a FF EVF camera, be it made by Panasonic or Leica, than an M9. I imagine that a FF EVF would have to be larger than an M8, but if Leica users are willing to live with the new S series for new large lenses, why not a new EFV camera for the existing small-ish M lenses? Precise focus would be the essence of the dream. Goodbye back focus and focus shift. And, as with the G1, one would be able to focus at 5x magnification -- without the use of external magnification optics (limited to 1.4x). I could go on, but I would love to hear from other Lumix G1 users first about he idea of a FF EVF camera for Leica M. Who would be interested in starting a campaign with either Leica or Panasonic (or Olympus) to get research started? Tom
Advertisement Posted August 25, 2009 Posted August 25, 2009 Hi Etruscello, Take a look here M, S, R -- what about E?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Ivar B Posted August 25, 2009 Share #2 Posted August 25, 2009 We will probably be seeing something like this for the R system; this is the very least what was hinted at in Solms in June. For the M, you still have the problem with the strong bending of the light with M lenses which make them less than ideal for FF, and if this problem will be solved, remains to be seen. But I do agree that it might be interesting.
jaapv Posted August 25, 2009 Share #3 Posted August 25, 2009 Who would be interested in starting a campaign with either Leica or Panasonic (or Olympus) to get research started?Tom I'm sure you'll find plenty of takers amongst the more vocal members here But whether it would make one whit of difference to the marching route of any camera maker is another matter. noah_addis Posted August 25, 2009 Share #4 Posted August 25, 2009 I'd much rather switch to an SLR (and plenty of good ones are made by canon and nikon) than switch to a camera with an EVF. I shoot with Leica M cameras specifically because of the rangefinder focusing and viewing system. Without that, it's just another camera, albeit one with good lenses. Even good EVF systems aren't the same as a bright clear M viewfinder. Just my opinion though...
luigi bertolotti Posted August 25, 2009 Share #5 Posted August 25, 2009 EVF with FF sensor and M lenses can be technically challenging, but despite the full rumors on M9, I like so much my M8 and am so nicely accustomed to its cropped format, that a "Panasonic G2" with 18x27 sensor, dimensions not too larger than G1, M lenses capability, would be seriously considered by myself. No idea if this could be a viable project for Pana :their only interest towards "large" sensors still seems to be 4/3, and 18x27 is a format that "sounds strange", apart for M8 users...
