miami91 Posted August 17, 2009 Share #1 Posted August 17, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Saw a D-Lux 4 (or possibly D-Lux 3) on tonight's episode of the HBO show "Hung". Red dot visible from front on several occasions, and then two characters look at images on the LCD, and "Leica Camera Germany" is clear as day. Took a snap on my (you guessed it!) D-Lux 4; image attached. Things like this are never an accident, so either excellent work by Leica USA promotions, or there must be a Leica aficionado among the cast/crew of Hung. Jeff. Advertisement Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 Hi miami91, Take a look here Leica Product Placement --- "Hung". I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
NZDavid Posted August 17, 2009 Share #2 Posted August 17, 2009 A well-hung camera then!
jimbo035 Posted August 17, 2009 Share #3 Posted August 17, 2009 must be a 3, as my 4 doesn't have LEICA CAMERA GERMANY inscribed on the back, and the one in the photo doesn't seem to have an AF/AE Lock button. Still, the product placement thing probably drew a certain number of interested people to Leica dealerships.....some of whom may have been dismayed to discover it is also discretely labelled "Made in Japan" elsewhere.... ho_co Posted August 17, 2009 Share #4 Posted August 17, 2009 Very interesting. Good placement indeed. But to my eye the camera looks awfully tacky with silver buttons on a black body. Not Leica-like at all. Did the D-Lux 3 actually have that design 'feature'? (At first glance, the image looks like a Photoshop paste-up to me.) Anyway, looks like a sensitive chick in the pic! miami91 Posted August 17, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted August 17, 2009 Very interesting. Good placement indeed. But to my eye the camera looks awfully tacky with silver buttons on a black body. Not Leica-like at all. Did the D-Lux 3 actually have that design 'feature'? (At first glance, the image looks like a Photoshop paste-up to me.) Yes, both the D-Lux 3 and D-Lux 4 have silver buttons on the black body. Simple look at Leica's homepage would tell you that: Leica Camera AG - Photography - D-Lux 3 Photoshop paste-up??? It's a photo of a television show paused on my Tivo. What exactly looks fake to you? Jeff. PS: the woman in the photo is the character Tanya, the pimp (aka "happiness consultant") for the well-endowed male prostitute from which the show gets its name. Good show, by the way. Funny and a little sad. http://www.hbo.com/hung/
ho_co Posted August 18, 2009 Share #6 Posted August 18, 2009 Sorry, Jeff. Didn't mean to offend. Yes, both the D-Lux 3 and D-Lux 4 have silver buttons on the black body. Simple look at Leica's homepage would tell you that: Leica Camera AG - Photography - D-Lux 3 ... Thanks for doing my research for me. I didn't think to look for the D-Lux 3 on Leica's US site; it's no longer on the German one. ... Photoshop paste-up??? ... Note my words: "At first glance, the image looks like a Photoshop paste-up to me." First impression overcome by your explanation. ... What exactly looks fake to you? ... I said "tacky," not "fake." You're right that the buttons are chrome even on the current body; I mis-spoke in reaction to the silver-colored disc. That and the very noticeable "LEICA CAMERA GERMANY" (also mentioned by jimb above) look to me like the kind of styling faux pas that Leica wouldn't make. I don't mind a silver disc on a silver body, as on the D-Lux 2, where "LEICA CAMERA GERMANY" is nicely placed beneath the screen. The back of the D-Lux 4 has done away with both the chrome disc and the "LEICA CAMERA GERMANY." I hadn't seen a D-Lux 3 before your post. I think Leica did well to place that camera on the show particularly because "LEICA CAMERA GERMANY" is so prominent. That wouldn't have been the case with the D-Lux 4. As I said above, thanks for the education!

miami91 Posted August 18, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted August 18, 2009 No harm Howard. Just didn't want anyone thinking I was trying to do a mock-up to fool people. That's not my style. Trivial or not, I enjoy participating in the Leica-spotting in media, pop culture, etc. Someone just the other day was noting a Leica used in season 1 of the series "The Wire", a show I didn't/don't watch (but have heard good things about). As for the button design, I now own the D-Lux 4, and used to own the D-Lux 3. When I first spotted the camera on the show, I assumed D-Lux 4, as the size, shape, and color are so familiar to me. But clearly, due to buttons, absence of the power switch on the back, and the "Leica Camera Germany" branding on the LCD, its a D-Lux 3. I agree with you that the styling of the D-Lux 4 is a bit nicer, although I imagine that the Leica Germany branding gave way only because they needed extra space for the larger LCD. Jeff. ho_co Posted August 18, 2009 Share #9 Posted August 18, 2009 Just a PanaLeica Howard. Would you say this one is tacky as well? Actually, Digilux 1 looks even better when wearing its black screen cover! Leica's styling really paid off when they included that free accessory. lct Posted August 18, 2009 Share #10 Posted August 18, 2009 He he! yes but it had a viewfinder at least. Still hunting for a better compact BTW.
ho_co Posted August 19, 2009 Share #11 Posted August 19, 2009 lct, you've won on this one. The D-Lux 4 is quite a very decent piece of equipment. I like it a lot and use it daily. But I've finally decided it needs a finder. A lot of the time, the external clip-on VF would be fine; but it's always back home because it's too big to put into the belt case I keep the camera in. I'm coming to think the Digilux 2 was the best compromise. A little bigger than I'd like, but it's got a good lens and its viewfinder is more accurate than that of the Digilux 1.
