M8 Owners unite

I have had my M8 for less than a week. I guess I am lucky because their are some of you who are still waiting. I have read about the problems, the comments from Leica, and the commitment from Leica to fix the problem. As I hear it, they are making us wait 2 more weeks before they let us know what the solution will be.

My problem is, that I am scared! I also feel as though I have been taken advantage of. Fortunately I have friends who share my concern and fear. These friends include all the members of this forum.

I put forward the concept of uniting as a force and force this issue, instead of sitting back and waiting.

Let's discuss a method of showing this unity. What if we all agreed to return our M8s?

Hopefully we can be heard.

Ya know, it never ceases to amaze me how impatient this world has become. Leica has said that they would announce their plans in two weeks. Why can't we wait two weeks to hear what they have to say before we all go jumping off the deep end?

If you wish to return your camera, by all means please do so. I am willing to wait until I hear what they have to say.

Ed, when you bot your camera you must have known what kind of company Leica is. No other manufacturer of anything in this world repairs things for 60 years.

Relax. Leica is fixing this and they'll make sure that your purchase is just what you were expecting.

You won't turn out to be disappointed.

Excuse me, my friends, but you don't seem to have read the thread "Some news about the M8", earlier today. Apparently, the "definitive" solution Leica would soon offer to solve the magenta cast problem would be... to use IR filters in front of the camera. To be confirmed, granted, but it has all the apparences of being unfortunately true.

Those are machined parts not an electro optical system. There are computer tapes and programs and hardware built by companies that are far bigger and have deeper pockets than Leica and they can't run or get parts for and it just doesn't happen. It called end of life.

I don't think you'll see future digital Leicas having more than a 5 year life cycle.

QUOTE]

I am unfortunately learning, through readings on this forum and deductive reasoning, that Leica has shipped a product that it knew had these issues. In a rush to receive revenue they have taken advantage of their customers and shipped an inferior product. Now the problem which was theirs has become ours.

If the solution they provide does not meet my approval in two weeks, or more, will I have the ability to return the camera and lens for a full refund? If so, then I will wait patiently.

Sat on the fence when mine arrived (and started using an RD-1 that also came). Tried it, and I'm definitely keeping it. It is a superb camera at it's cores with problems that, even if Leica did nothing, can be worked around with the effort repaid handsomely. I trust Leica will do better still. best....Peter

Mine has not come in yet.

But

I called my dealer and told him " I Still Want It " so as soon as my turn comes up I am taking it.

I trust Leica to get it fixed and will use it until they do.

u haven't heard? the "fix" is to buy a set of IR filters, and for the more optimal solution, to use only Leica lenses and get them all coded as well.

Why should the Leica "Fix" cost those who have already bought the camera any extra money?

Why are people still willing to blow $5000.00 on a camera that is not street ready?????

Perhaps what we need is a Leica RECOVERY GROUP. This Leica obsession with the M8 is starting to sound like a cult. A cameras like the M3 earned its reputation, this new kid on the block came broken, and people are still lining up to buy it. Only in the Loco Leica world!

I don't mean to rain on any one's parade (actually Leica already did that) but this is insanity! Leica should just start offering refunds to all those who bought their cameras - with reasonable expectations - and now are being told they have to have their lenses coded and to purchase filters . I guess Leica figures that if you are wealthy enough to purchase the camera, you can keep blowing over $150.00 per lens to get the camera to work right.

More than a support group, a RECOVERY group is called for! The more I follow this saga, the more disappointed I become with Leica, and I didn't even spend a cent on an M8. I'm out of here...

Hello,

I agree with everyone here. The M8 is a fine camera and will only be better because

off everyone who were willing to be the first to own it. I think most camera companies

today will try to work as many issues with their products out as best they can.

They test and use and test before they issue the new model. But nothing works

better than getting it into as many hands as they can. That will surely find any

issues, problems, flaws and hopfully they can fix these. Leica is no different.

They did the best they could, they had all of us almost begging for the camera

and they delivered. It may save the company and we know they will deliver the

fix for those now in our hands and fix all the ones now in assembly. I know

its frustrating but it will be fixed and furture ones will be better. Thanks

for being the first and thanks for sharing the problem with us all.

Wilfredo--Here's the way I look at it, and maybe this will explain at least one point of view. I make my living with cameras. Given a choice between working with SLRs and rangefinders, I strongly prefer the rangefinder. It fits my style of shooting. I also love the lenses I have accumulated for my M film cameras. I'd have been very happy to continue to use my film Ms for the rest of my career life, but my clients now all demand digital images. If I want to be able to continue using a rangefinder and those great lenses, I need the M8. I don't just want the M8--I need it. I think we all know the Leica M lenses have a look all their own that can't be matched by anything else and if I can do shoots digitally with them I'll be satisfied that I am giving my clients the same look I gave them with my film Ms. That's important to me--important enough to put up with the initial problems.

I'm no more thrilled with the current situation than anyone else is. But I feel things are headed in the right direction and at this point, I'm still willing to pay the price because I feel the end result will be worth it.

Maybe the suggestion of returning the camera sent the wrong message.

All I am trying to do is "unite" the owners, and future owners, of this camera into one united front with one message.

I think we all agree the camera is currently flawed, and that Leica has agreed to come up with some solutions.

What is wrong with acting as a group with a common message. It would seem to me that Leica would be more interested in hearing from us a group versus hundreds of individuals with differing agendas and expectations.

Let's start this conversation over and try and work together and create strength in numbers.

when a group with normally diverse opinions acts blindly as a group with one opinion, I think it is call mass hysteria or mob behavior.

If anything there is a clear majority from the poll that people want to keep their M8, work with and support Leica. We don't have to do it out of 'joining' a group; the individual votes are there.

What we all need to agree on is the damage done to both Leica and the users who are satisfied, by the insesent harping, and the over vocal few.

Put my agenda alongside yours and you are bound to find differences. Introduce another party, another agenda. So, who will sacrifice their agenda to unite with mine? See the problem with unity as a group.

I suggest to you that we already have unity as individuals and probably more effectively so, as Leica will be painfully aware of our numbers. Sitting around waiting for "two weeks" to pass can be very soul destoying. I recommend finding some productive work to fill the time, as some of us are forced to do anyway. I still have to take pictures, just not with my camera of choice in some instances. So be it for the time being. Others above have re-iterated their need to press on and are so doing.

Cheers,

Erl

Bruce, my cameras are working cameras. I believe in rangefinders, but (given commercial workflow these days) not in film. So for me, the M8 was a godsend. So no, the clock is ticking, assignments are waiting, and I can't wait 2 weeks for Leica to announce a solution. At the moment I have one of their cameras and it is essentially a very expensive paperweight. I own Canon pro cameras and never like this has ever happened with Canon, I can assure you. Pro Service is right on the mark with Canon, at least in my experience.

I'm so glad I still have my RD-1, but 6mp won't cut it with editors. That's why this really compromises me professionally as well, and that is why my anger is at the level it is, about this.
