pgk Posted August 11, 2009 Share #1 Posted August 11, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) To change the tack away from the M9 discussions, what features would you least miss (or even prefer not to have) on the M8? I'm not asking what additional features you'd like (please), just which you could lose. Personally I'd be happy to lose the usb port (never used it), the jpeg & B&W files (I only shoot RAWs) and the C shooting mode (never bothered with that either). So if you could strip down features which would be first to go?
Advertisement Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 Hi pgk, Take a look here What would you least miss on the M8?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
mat_mcdermott Posted August 11, 2009 Share #2 Posted August 11, 2009 I've never even opened the USB port. Could easily move the self-timer to a separate button or menu item (provided it didn't auto reset) -- I've actually missed shots because the switch got bumped without me noticing it. A deeper indent would also work though. Never used the protect button. That's about it.
Bo_Lorentzen Posted August 11, 2009 Share #3 Posted August 11, 2009 PGK, ...? There is a USB port... how interesting, no idea what I would use that for, The C mode is a puzzlement to me, its not like I do much heigh jumping photography with the M (that is what my DSLRs are for) That S mode... delete it permanently - sometimes it have switched to it by accident, take me forever to figure out why nothing is working. Never used the DELETE or the PROTECT buttons either.. can live fine without them. So I would not miss... USB port, C continues mode S Stupid mode DELETE PROTECT Dear Leica, whatever you do, don't put more buttons on my M. would it not be something if there were a W for weather upgrade path, I would spend the money in a flash on that upgrade. . Guest Bernd Banken Posted August 11, 2009 Share #5 Posted August 11, 2009 More missing features means less customers.......but that's normal for Leica since the last thirty years.......
Ecar Posted August 11, 2009 Share #6 Posted August 11, 2009 So I would not miss... USB port, C continues mode S Stupid mode DELETE PROTECT . Same here. Although I must say the DELETE button has been handy a few times - e.g., going out for a "casual" walk with only the camera and one lens only to realise that there are indeed many photo opportunities but the SD card is nearly full... Being able to quickly delete some obvious misses to free up space was very useful in such a situation.

Marty Posted August 11, 2009 Share #8 Posted August 11, 2009 The UV/IR filter requirement More seriously: what Bo said. Having not enough space on a card can be solved by carrying more cards...
Mark Pope Posted August 11, 2009 Share #9 Posted August 11, 2009 Definitely the USB port - replace it with a card slot so it obviates the need to take the bottom off the camera to change cards. Cyan corners. I hesitate to say UV/IR filters as if they did do away with them then that means the camera's IR sensitivity would be reduced. I happen to like taking IR pictures with the M8, so I will have to live with the consequences I guess. The short battery life compared to cameras such as the Canon DSLRs. Even the small ones like the 350D outperform the M8 in this area. Cheers Mark
RockyIII Posted August 11, 2009 Share #10 Posted August 11, 2009 I would not miss the USB port. Rocky
chris_tribble Posted August 11, 2009 Share #11 Posted August 11, 2009 FWIW... USB port C mode (never use it) M8.2 - S mode, EV compensation via the up/down arrows
fotografr Posted August 11, 2009 Share #12 Posted August 11, 2009 The shutter clunk. There's no reason the M9 can't sound like my M6.

Nicoleica Posted August 11, 2009 Share #14 Posted August 11, 2009 The shutter clunk. There's no reason the M9 can't sound like my M6. Apart from them being completely different types of shutter, and the M6 not having a motor wind built in.
Bo_Lorentzen Posted August 11, 2009 Share #15 Posted August 11, 2009 But Nicole, my M6 is very quiet - then the winder kicks in and the birds fly off trees nearby. which is why I stick to hand-cranking. Though, a cloth shutter-curtain might not be really brilliant with a digital sensor, as any kind of developed dust would make friends with the sensor. . SJP Posted August 11, 2009 Share #17 Posted August 11, 2009 They should provide the old 1/8000 shutter as an option M9EL (extra loud), for one people take you camera more seriously as it actually sounds like a real camera. Plus you need that speed wide open in daylight. Lose C mode & protect, add fast ISO adjust using a lever where the M2 had the self timer.
microview Posted August 11, 2009 Share #18 Posted August 11, 2009 'Nicoleica' is one of the most engaging and helpful posters in the forum; but I would definitely miss the 'C' shooting position of the top switch, since in street photos the people are never quite where you want them in the crop, so better to be able to take several shots rather than one. Nicoleica Posted August 11, 2009 Share #19 Posted August 11, 2009 Thank you Microview, that is very kind of you. However, I must explain that I listed 'C' mode as something that I would not miss, as purely my personal opinion, for I do not ever use it. I wasn't suggesting that others may not miss it. jonoslack Posted August 11, 2009 Share #20 Posted August 11, 2009 Self Timer stop on top switch Protect mode (is this really useful) That ought to allow enough spare buttonness to allow for ISO and exposure compensation on the buttons/ dial (shouldn't it?) I like the delete button though . . . and continuous isn't useless
