R8/R9 - how much for a new shutter?

The sucker hit the rocks lens first, then, yep, it bounced around and the rear of the camera took another hit.

So, the lens shade on my 180 was bent a bit, the mount on the lens and the body mount were askew.

The back door of the camera was warped too.

Basically tho', the innards of the lens and camera were ok: Kindermann fixed it all up [new lens and body mounts, rear door was straightened, and ding was fixed on lens], all still going good for 3 years now. Sorry, no shutter to donate :)

How's the new DMR? did it mate right up to one of your R8 bodies or did you have to have adjustments, etc ??

Hi Gary.

I've used an 800mm lens to check the focussing accuracy of my 'new' DMR, with the R8 it came with and with my own R8 (not the dead shutter one). It's within tolerance with both of them, but slightly different. The R8 it came with is an early build; the R8 I already had is a late build. The older one focusses slightly further back than the front one. They are both very close to bang on, if not actually bang on. So that's good news.

All I have to decide now is which one I will cannibalise for parts to repair my old favorite. Sniff, sniff.

I need some clues on how to pull an R8 apart (and maybe even on how to put it together again). Is anyone aware of instructions online somewhere? I guess the place to start is pulling out those rubber bumps under the camera.

Where's Mark Norton when you need him! :D

Howdy Charlie.

In my pre DMR days I had two R8s. A black one with a mid serial number and a silver one with a late serial number. A couple of weeks ago I destroyed the shutter of the black one when a film leader got in the way.

Quite separately (and in response to the 'There will be no R10' announcement) I bought a DMR from a forum member. It came with an early serial number black R8. So I now have three R8s, though only two work.

When tested with the DMR, the black R8 that came with it focusses ever so slightly behind my silver one, though they are both very close to being spot on. I prefer the focussing performance of the silver one. I'm mulling over the idea of pulling the good shutter out of the most recently acquired black R8 (which is in 'good user' condition) to repair my original and much loved black R8, which is in unmarked condition (apart from the totally stuffed shutter). Hence my interest in any guidance on pulling R8s apart (and putting them back together).

I think that's a bit clearer. :D

There's something in your point Doug.

My thinking was - once my old favorite has had its shutter transplant and is working again I'll keep it for film shooting. DMR focus accuracy wont be such an issue.

But your suggestion is, since the 'good user' is working (and focusses well with the DMR), leave it as is. Find an 'organ donor' somewhere and take the shutter out of that to fix my favourite. Hmmm, logical, but I'm itching to get at it. Hmmmm.... :)

p.s. Have you got any online versions of the DMR shots selected by the gallery guy?

  • 2 weeks later...

An R8 in excellent condition just sold in Aus on the Bay for about AUD 800. Cheaper to get your new spare shutter with a camera around it Rick.
