M9 rumours have saved me from madness

This is the worst time of the year for me. I'm terrible busy and I can't almost take a shot. Long, long hours working and missing my M8 and lenses but still thinking on photography. I'm really happy with my m8 and lenses but there is one lens that keeps me dreaming awake: the 24mm 1.4 summilux. I think that this is a lens that can bring me incredible shots and change my limits. It becomes a 32 on the M8, so still very good. It doesn't need external viewfinder on the M8 but it probably will need it on a full frame M9....

I was thinking of selling my dear 28mm f2.8 elmarit and buying a 5000 Euros brand new 24 f1.4 summilux. When I'm in a bad moment and I feel a bit weak is the moment that I think of buying this incredible lens. Later, when I calm again, I keep myself cool and sane and I change my idea. Is this really so wonderful lens that deserves to spend 5000 Euros? If I do it, my wife will never know it.;)

Anyway the recent rumours about the M9 have brought my thoughts to a new “stand by” again.

Rumours kill the sales...

I fully agree with that Miguel.

But on the other hand, I'm pretty happy with my two M8 and i don't think full frame (if the next coming M would be FF, which I doubt) would help my photographic art being in anyway better (I mean good).

As a new lux 24 owner I can confirm it is worth it. But you may find that you still want to keep the Elmarit 28, for the simple reason that it remains a stunning, versatile and extremely compact lens. It is one of the reasons why I have an M8 in the first place.

Sorry didn't want to make it more difficult :o

Well, for me these rumors came after I purchased the Summilux 24, or I might have had the same thoughts as you - but I am happy it went this way, because the lens is stunning. By the way, the M9 is likely to look very similar to the M8, so your wife need not know about either ;)

Do as I do, start covering the M8 logo with black tape. So when you get the M9 and you do the same, she won't notice. (I imagine the scene where the tape starts peeling off and the wife starts screaming "Miguel, cabron, you lied to me ... there is another one in your life") :D

I wouldn't count on it if I were you. We women do tend to notice these things! :D (The guilty looks and furtive actions tend to give secret purchases away too.)

I would agree with you, particularly since I'm such an abysmal liar. Full disclosure is always the best course and it can work to your advantage. For example, take this situation and quote, which really happened with an acquaintance: "Well dear, I have to do something to preserve my sanity, so it's either a Porsche or a mistress." (Note that I characterize him as an acquaintance, not a friend.)

Ah, yes! But the real solution is: Get the Porsche AND the mistress. Then claim the car belongs to her and she is only a friend!!

So what! If it doesn't work, you had a damn good time trying. ;);)

The famous Arthur Miller interview for the BBC, after being caught by his wife in bed with her best friend (she had returned early from holiday for the purpose)

"I left my wife immediately. I could not bear to live with somebody who wouldn't trust me!"

Miguel, I thought you were struggling with expense of a used 35 cron to add to your arsenal. Now, you're thinking possibly new 24 lux and/or M9!! Your wife isn't the only one unaware your secret stash:D I think you will have no problem pulling off the switch!

The general notion being that Arthur Miller was a Porsche

at least in writing.

Just as HCB, presently genius not in stock at the camera stores.

With the new M9...

I have the 1.4/24 as one of less then half a dozen lenses. It's specially flattering as a 1.4-32mm on a M8 when shooting people, because it draws the attention to the one you have in focus with other peolple in the picture, too.

One can photograph his wife with this lens with great(-ful) results. Or his Porsche and/or his mistress.

The more people get a 1.4/24mm (or any other 24mm!!) the higher the probability, that hopefully a M9 0.58 (or shorter) will follow 2010 with the 24mm frames in the viewfinder. On the M6&M7 the difference between the regular 0.75 and the 0.58 versions were only the usefulness for permanent spectacle wearers when using the 28mm lens.

In any case, getting a 1.4-35Asph right now could wait, since a new one is rumoured to arrive soon.

Me too.

I've been actively considering getting this lens for my M8 but I've put it on the back burner for the moment as it's a big expense that might not be the best general lens for me if the M9 does indeed turn out to be FF any time soon. Also, for me, it would be an either/or situation between the lens and a camera update, plus if the sensor turns out to be bigger it also makes me rethink which lenses I'd want to keep too. (For example, my 50 'lux that I don't use much on the M8 but would be ideal on FF, 75 cron vs 90 cron etc.)

Well, I did consider the 24 lux, but can't really get past the size yet. so for now I'm more interesting in a FF M giving me the same effect with a smaller lens. :)

That said, sadly other than new entertainment and tools, unfortunately there is no camera made so far which have actually made me a better photographer, one can only hope that a camera with a clear vision will eventually be made. Maybe the M15 with the HCB eye feature which gently will nudge the camera to improve composition and refuse to release on lame shots, will offer some hope for my images..

Month ago I finally received new Noctilux. It is an amazing lens, however on M8 it is too tight. On M9 it will be perfect and I will use it most of the time. I am totally happy with M8 but because of Noctilux I will consider upgrade to M9.

I don't understand the original posters dilemma, actually: on the m8 the 24 Lux will be a great lens. On the M9 the 24 Lux will be a great lens.

IOW, the camera doesn't make that much difference, and honestly, neither does the crop.

If you want something super sharp and high contrast throughout it's range, you buy the 24 Elmarit, which kicks the stuff out of the 28 'cron in those terms anyway. There's nothing till the 35 Lux ASPH that comes close.

If you want something ridiculously fast for such a wide angle, then the 24 Lux is the one to get. Lower contrast, softer in the corners, but when you need the stop or want the look from a 1.4 lens, you need the stop and the aperture, M9 or no.

On the M9, both will be great 24s, but different. On the M8, both are great "32mm" lenses, but different.

Could be a few things, Jamie. One, just the expense of both a 24 and an M9...not something he anticipated. Second, if the M9 is full frame, it might require an external finder for the 24...possibly something not preferred. And, while I don't let the crop determine my lens selection, many others do look at the effective FOV in their lens decisions.

The point is though that the crop does matter in terms of the utility of the lens. On an M8 the 24/1.4 crops and acts like a 32mm for framing and makes for an almost ideal fast walkaround lens. On a FF sensor this would have the same characteristics but would frame as a true 24mm which (in my case at least) is too wide for my normal walkaround lens - I'd use a 35/1.4 instead on FF.

It's true that the lens is the same, the rendering is the same etc etc but the crop does make a big difference to how the lens would be used, and how often.

I'll probably sell my 24 'Lux if a full frame M digital comes out. Not because it won't still be an amazing lens, but because with a FF camera it will likely require an external finder. And more importantly, I don't love the 24mm focal length on full frame.

I'll gladly go back to my 28 'Cron as my main lens if there is a full-frame M digital.

When I decided to go for the 'Lux, it was before the most recent rumors started to fly around. If I hadn't bought it yet, I MIGHT wait till september just out of curiosity.

But I don't think a FF camera is all that close. And when (and if) a full frame camera does come, I figure I can sell the 'Lux to help pay for it. With the way leica glass prices keep going up, I probably won't lose that much money, and the cost of ownership is more than worth it to me since I now have an effective low-light kit.
