Shootist Posted August 9, 2009 Share #21 Posted August 9, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have taken note of the above inputs ....BUT....1 If I remove the bottom cover does that not allow dust and humidity into the camera temporarily? Personally I consider my M8 as something I need to keep all hatches closed as far as possible.....I am asking : Is it not the case that opening the base plate is against that principle and logic? 2 The idea to charge the battery while downloading a memory module looks good at a first look I completeley agree until one recognises that the memory download takes 30 seconds mostly.....BUT: > a battery charge takes say 6 hours........or more > actually ideally I believe that the battery should be allowed to be fully discharged and then recharged to full (overnight?) > Is it not best to use a battery until FULLY discharged and then use a second fully charged battery in the camera? Is this not the way to do things? Thanks for any help on this one. Do you even own a M8? Because some of the statements you make in this thread lead me to think you don't. 6 hours or longer to charge the battery. What do you have a hamster on a wheel running a generator to power the charger. Li-Ion battery don't like to be fully discharged all the time so no it is NOT BEST to use a battery until it is fully discharger. Do some reading on Li-Ion batteries. As to your # 2 above. Hopefully you have more then one battery so when you take the bottom plate off to extract the card and get images off it, IF the battery is less then full take that out also and replace it with a fully charged battery and put that less then full battery in the charger. Between the 2 of us am I the only one that has any common sense. As to your # 1. I agree with stunsworth and the little comment he made at the end of his post. I'm undecided but I'm leaning towards the word that could be misconstrued as the name of a dark redish brown to dark purplish red color.

ljclark Posted August 9, 2009 Share #23 Posted August 9, 2009 With regards to opening the bottom... Confession time here. I sometimes find myself turning my back to the sun when I open the bottom of the M8. We know where that habit comes from...And the old ones sometimes hard to break. Philippe D. Posted August 9, 2009 Share #24 Posted August 9, 2009 For me, the USB port on the M8 would be only useful to put in the connection for using the Leica Digital Capture (if it where usable, which is not because incomplete) or, for using a remote trigger with timer, like this ownuser SIR 2 (if an USB version could be available). To empty the SD card this way, is IMO more or less foolish. Cheers
Guest BigSplash Posted August 9, 2009 Share #25 Posted August 9, 2009 Thanks for the feedback......and I shall follow the advice. 1 I thought Li Ion batteries liked to be regularly cycled from empty....it is news to me that this is not the case and I shall regularly charge in future. I keep a spare in any case. 2 I was told by my dealer that prior to using the camera it is best to charge the battery overnight ...and that has been my approach. I now understand that to charge an empty battery ......a few hours is OK. (Although my experience is 1/4 full to 3/4 full takes about 3 hours....using the Leica std charger) 3 I recognise that changing lenses is much more dust and humidity critical (due to sensor) than openening the base plate. However.....personally I like to minimise the time the camera internals are ever exposed. That said I shall use the card reader approach from now on. Thanks for the help. I guess this thread is now closed.
jaapv Posted August 9, 2009 Share #26 Posted August 9, 2009 Do you have an M8 for each lens you own? If not which do you think lets more "dust and humidity" into the camera, removing the baseplate or changing a lens? There are times when I wonder if we're dealing with a troll or a moron. At the moment I'm undecided. Both, Steve
vanhulsenbeek Posted August 9, 2009 Share #27 Posted August 9, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Both, Steve On a somewhat less exasperated note than Jaap's and Steve's: I always marvel at the, apparently widespread, understanding that once we take the bottom-lid off we expose all the innards of the camera. To me, things looks pretty much closed off there - apart from the two slots where we do not know where they go - and in any case much better closed off than on the front side when taking off the lens. There you are really splashing dust and whatever on inner barrel, shutter and - shudder - sensor

arthurpreston Posted August 9, 2009 Share #30 Posted August 9, 2009 I began using the usb to the camera, and found right away that if I tried to connect to the internet while doing so, my downloads would mess up. I had bought a card reader for other purposes, and tried it one day. It was so simple, I will never go back to connecting the usb to my camera.
