Black M8.2 paint - marks

The general consensus seems to be.........It is a Leica trait - live with it!

I re-iterate, I worked as a PJ for many years carrying Leica M4-2 / M6 bodies and did not encounter a wear rate such as ths encountered on my M8.2.

I am very much a user not a poser so will live with it - it just means that if I do wish to sell at some stage, the resale value willbe sorely affected and that annoys me as my DSLR had heavy use and showed no wear so maximised trade in against M8.

Thanks Leica

Given that Leica have only made "black paint" black M8.2s, surely they will ALL be brassing by the time people come to trade them in (unless they haven't been used, of course). So, everyone's trade in will be in the same boat.

It will make it a lot easier to spot a rarely used example, though.

Ian - I tend to agree. The black chrome on my M6s and M7 + the M8 are a much better finish IMHO. If I had had the choice I would not have chosen the M8.2 in paint. In fact, of the Ms I own, the M8u is my favourite. No S(tupid) mode and a better finish. Also, no on the fly EV mode, but I rarely use this anyway...

Just my 2c..

Hmm - I don't have an 8.2, but my second M8 came back from it's upgrade a week or so back. the Black chrome has become silverish at the edges and places where my hands go (no scratches though). with it's new LCD, back plate and vulkanite it's looking rather splendidly funky (I think so anyway!)

Ian, the M4-2's you mentioned were black chrome (except for some gold ones!), If you had black M6's they were the same. The M8 has the same options (as the M6). For the M8.2 you can of course still get a silver chrome version if you dislike the black lacquer. Leica went back to the option for traditional black lacquer becuase that is what many paying customers said they wanted. Very likely it costs more than the black chrome to produce. As a photojournalist and very much not a poser, I would guess that you may use cameras hard. Clearly they will wear and resale value won't be your major consideration? If that is most important then you have three M8 /8.2 versions at least as good as what you had before to choose from.

I'm glad that I chose a silver chrome M8. Plus, I think that 'M's look better in chrome anyway. :)

That's what I think and did as well. And add that the dot must be red on my camera, I'm such an old fashioned...

Besides, I think is the one that really goes unnoticed since nobody mind an antediluvian film camera.

Yes, but your M4-2 and M6 bodies were black chrome, not black paint. Again, I think it's an open question whether black paint was a good choice, but it is what it is (paint, not chrome). In recent years, black paint had been available only on limited edition and custom cameras, rather than being a general-issue finish (and the only choice in black).

Under the current wear rate, by the time my camera is 12 - 18months old it should have acquired a nice traditional "Leica patina" to it with brass showing through the black areas!

and with the photos to go with it. I prefer BP in all cases as it gives far better grip than any of the satin finishes. My BP MPs feel much better in the hand than the chrome or Black chrome bodies.

One does not buy digital cameras and expect good resale. leicas are not much different relative to their original cost. I bought BP bodies in the knowledge the chrome would prob age better bec of the reasons stated and the fact that they don't sparkle like jewels

If you look at the MP configurator on the Leica site it's clear that Leica intend the black paint to work this way. (see pic)

Unfortunately it doesn't say that to my knowledge on the M8.2 page so when I bought a black 8.2 it did wear very fast and I was surprised until I learned about the intentional brassing effect!

When I replaced it with another 8.2 I got a chrome silver one for a change and although I have picked up a couple of tiny scratches it is indeed bulletproof by comparison which actually suits me better.

I suppose it would not hurt if in the advertisement Leica would warn that the black paint finish will wear off on the edges. It is not unreasonable for a consumer to assume it will not wear off. Most of us know about this particularity and are fine with it but a warning would not hurt.

It's clear from the responses on this thread that tastes and expectations vary considerably. Maybe Leica should also consider offering a black epoxy finish, which would wear better than lacquer and look better than black chrome.

I have just noticed this thread and I am really interested that nobody else has shown wear on a chrome camera. Here is my M8, and apart from the pink (it is about to go grey lizard when morgan cuts it) my M8 has a very distinctive and IMO attarctive wear where (just to prove English is a dastardly difficuly language to learn) my I hold the camera.
