Advertisement Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 Hi dkCambridgeshire, Take a look here Lots of Leica users in Tokyo .... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
JBA Posted August 5, 2009 Share #2 Posted August 5, 2009 I know him. He's photographed me several times. If you go back far enough, I appear with my motor-driven R8 and 90 Summicron (pink polo shirt) and M6, Nikon F, and Leica MP (orange polo). He uses a silver MP with 35 Summicron and 50 Summicron, and develops and prints his own B&W.

bill Posted August 5, 2009 Share #4 Posted August 5, 2009 So. This raises an interesting question. If it is such an active market for Leica why are there not more Japanese members active here in the Forum? Regards, Bill

Maybe they have their own Japanese fora. Maybe we should send them an invitation ... especially to see their photographs! Cheers dunk
mongrelnomad Posted August 5, 2009 Share #6 Posted August 5, 2009 I love camera-watching in Japan - especially in sakura season when all kinds of wierd-and-wonderful cameras (Fuji 617s, Arcbodies etc) come out of the woodwork. In Israel too I tend to see alot of film cameras out-and-about, but they tend to be your standard MFs - Mamiya7s, Bronica 645s etc...
JBA Posted August 5, 2009 Share #7 Posted August 5, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) So. This raises an interesting question. If it is such an active market for Leica why are there not more Japanese members active here in the Forum? Regards, Bill Bill, The simple answer, based on my experience as a professional translator, is that the language barrier is huge. Also, the spoken language is easier than the written language. My spoken and written Japanese are fairly competent, and I'd far prefer to talk in person with the handful of Japanese Leica aficionados I know than try to chat in writing with them on the internet. Probably not too many Leica people are proficient enough to move with ease between both languages. But believe me, film photography of all types is alive and well here. Tokyo Camera Style provides abundant evidence of that. (Its author is American, by the way.) Jonathan

I assume the person was not actually carrying 3 cameras around with him. If he was he is not a photographer he is a mobile camera shop. Far too overstated for my taste

earleygallery Posted August 5, 2009 Share #11 Posted August 5, 2009 Cunning lot the Japanese, they make digital cameras to sell to the rest of the world so that they can pick up some lovely film equipment for the price of a few sushi rolls!

budrichard Posted August 5, 2009 Share #14 Posted August 5, 2009 Lovely Nikon F mind it doesn't get bumped by the others. I assume the person was not actually carrying 3 cameras around with him. If he was he is not a photographer he is a mobile camera shop. Far too overstated for my taste Before the Age of Digital and Super Zoom lenses with one big flash astride the whole mess, photographers that worked in the field actually did carry multiple cameras. Most of the reason was to have instant changes of focul length and because the M usually ended at 90mm, a Nikon F was many times used for 135mm and longer. Me, I carried two F's, one with 24mm and one with 135mm. I had access to an M but just found it too slow for news work. As an aside, the last bastion of film will be Japan and Fuji will probably be the last major company to supply color reversal film. After that is gone there may be one or two small suppliers of B&W or possible C-41, but that will be it.-Dick

I almost never carry just one. It's not a matter of taste. Cameras, for me at least, are not fashion accessories. Anyhow, here's one of the photos I took that day with the Nikon F. on Flickr - Photo Sharing!
