m9..another urban legend?

my Leica dealer in Hong Kong said "m9 coming announcement september 2009, probably from germany (i like that bit), 20,000,000 pixels and hk$60,000"(roughly us$7,700). He didn't say much more than that and the combination of tight schedule and the need NOT to buy anything else expensive saw me running out the door...anybody else hear anything about this?

The short answer would be that there are enough M9 rumors out there that it's likely at least one of them matches yours.

The specs and price are probably not out of line with what is possible/probable for an M9 (assuming 24 x 36 sensor as well). But anyone could make that educated guess with a little math applied to M8 and S2 specs.

An announcement in Sept. could also be possible once the S2 is out the door - but I doubt a camera will actually hit the market until well into winter, or even much later. After all, the S2 has had a 1-year lag between announcement (9/08) and delivery (we hope, 9/09).

Leica's Stephan Daniels said in May (?) that they had solved some of the technical problems but not all, and there was nothing even close to a date given.

Some basic specs and a price, roughly similar in scope to what you heard, were what were released by Leica in 12/05 regarding the original M8 - that was 9 months before the actual introduction and 11 months before deliveries.

Purely based on cosmic convergence and no other reason I will wager a small sum on Leica announcing the M9 on 09/09/09 (Wink!) - Thanks to whoever it was on another thread who noted this - uhh - intriguing date.

Presumably then, the R10 (or should that be the M10?) will be announced on 10/10/10...

...and 33 months before the firmware finally fixed most of the well known problems in September 2008. So don't hold your breath.

I would not expect an early announcement of an M9. Neither the M8 or the S2 competed directly with any existing Leica products, while an M9 most probably will be regarded as a successor to the M8, and kill M8 sales in the period from announcement to release. Look at Apple - on announcement most upgrade products are already in the stores, or very near release. If it is positioned very differently form the M8 (full frame, double price (I hope not!)), it will be a different case, however.

I don't see how it's possible to square the comment from Stefan Daniel a month or so ago that they were making some progress with the rumour of an announcement in 6 weeks time. The lead times on these things are such that Photokina 2010, 14 months away, would be tight, IMHO.

How much for a used M8 once the M9 hits the streets???

I think that the price of a used M8 in working condition will drop to about £1000.00 and probably hover around that figure depending on condition.Lets face it for someone starting out or as a spare it would be ok.If the camera was not working it would be worth nothing.

I dont think an upgraded camera would be worth any more.

Cool - I'd buy a second body then :D

@ OP: did your vendor say whether it's coming from east or west germany? ;)
