My new Summilux 50 did not focus quite correctly, so I left it in Solms on June 12th. When it did not reappear within two weeks, the "repair was being held up due to lack of spare parts". I distrusted that as I did not see how an adjustment on a new lens needed spare parts, but benefit of the doubt, something might have been out of spec.

I got the lens back today:

adjust focussing ring

adjustment of all parts

optical adjustment M8 (????)

adjustment of all parts (????)

we make test pictures to check quality

What spare parts? :mad::mad:

Jaapv I thought that you were positive about the after sales service of Leica. I personally have never had a good experience except when i went to Wetzlar years ago and they checked and adjusted a M4 while I watched.

Otherwise it is overpriced, it take much too long to do simple things like you have experienced and sometimes the item is returned with the flash lead not connected or equivalent horror showing a less than perfect service or repair.

A new lid for a M4 took over six months due they said to engraving of the serial number.

In general I am very happy with Leica after sales, and I probably would not have posted this just for the longish wait. I do dislike, however, being told fibs.

I would read it as:

1 adjust focussing ring - adjustment of all parts

2 optical adjustment M8 - adjustment of all parts

3 we make test pictures to check quality

First - check if the lens is assembled correctly wrt focussing.

Second - optimise to "M8 specifications" i.e. using lower tolerances than might have been acceptable with film.

Third - final check.

Re. 2 I thought you need shims for focus adjustment? Maybe the local shim-shop was closed or whatever. That would be "unavailable parts".

Even if the lens is new I guess step 2 is not idiot proof and may have been out of spec during manufacture - a small spec of dust etc. could cause that.

Get in line and suffer.

Two weeks? Read the fine print they give themselves ten days or something to log the item after receipt. You guys that visit in porsches or whatever and have contacts have had a free ride for too long.

Am I correct in thinking that a M8 can be tested and if needed adjusted as a standalone item, and then each lens can be individually checked and if required adjusted to meet the spec for digital.?

I am wondering if each M8 and every lens has to be adjusted as a matched pair ...iI that is the case, I guess it would take a long time to handcraft all the bits to match and fine tune the parts with shims or whatever.

Read again: five weeks for simple adjustement. And just hours after the head of CS told me that average turnaround was within 5 days for over 80% of the jobs.

No,it gets matched against a standard body. And the availability of shims? This is a current production lens. They could not build if it they had not got little boxes of shims standing around.

Maybe you should send repairs to New Jersey instead:D I recently sent my 50 Lux for adjustment...and threw in 3 other lenses and body...back in my hands in 2 weeks, everything perfect. And, I'm told NJ now has some techs from your side of the pond.
