Guest BigSplash Posted July 22, 2009 Share #3 Posted July 22, 2009 Probably just on shut down for the holiday period. Normal for Spain/Portual/Italy etc. What does Portugal Leica make in Portugal? I know that they built a plant some 20 years ago in Portugal and they made the Pradovit projectors, binoculars and M parts as I remember it. They also built up a Canada plant for lenses. My understanding was that both no longer were operational.....seems that this is not the case. Any visibility?
andybarton Posted July 22, 2009 Share #4 Posted July 22, 2009 They build all M7s, MPs and M8s there, as well as binoculars.
georg Posted July 22, 2009 Share #5 Posted July 22, 2009 Components (which are manufactured by the older machines from Wetzlar/Ontario) and sub-assembly for the bodies and the small 20/25-binoculars as well as accessoires.
michael_e Posted July 22, 2009 Share #6 Posted July 22, 2009 As far as I know summer holidays in Portugal range from June, 09 to September, 15 depending on the region one lives in. Companies usually close for summer holidays during July to August. Hence, no reason for any fears on the economic situation, just vacation. The only remaning question I have is: What happens to the workers who made the R8/R9 after Leica discontinued the R-system?

Interesting...My M8 says made in Germany, if it was made in Portugal would it identify it as such? What about Canada...is that still operational. Many of my older lenses were made in Canada? veraikon Posted July 23, 2009 Share #8 Posted July 23, 2009 What about Canada...is that still operational. Many of my older lenses were made in Canada? yea it is named ELCAN (Ernst Leitz CANada), but Elcan is not in the Leica family ELCAN The "last" Leica item which was made there was the "old " Noctilix 1.0. (till 2008)
steich Posted July 23, 2009 Author Share #9 Posted July 23, 2009 The only remaning question I have is: What happens to the workers who made the R8/R9 after Leica discontinued the R-system? M8? S2? Anyway, they obviously haven´t made too many Rs in the past two or three years, have they? Regards Stefan
jaapv Posted July 23, 2009 Share #10 Posted July 23, 2009 The only remaning question I have is: What happens to the workers who made the R8/R9 after Leica discontinued the R-system? There have virtually no bodyshells been made for the R8 and R9 for years, due to lack of sales. Nothing new there.
steich Posted July 23, 2009 Author Share #11 Posted July 23, 2009 Interesting...My M8 says made in Germany, if it was made in Portugal would it identify it as such? As we can see in Leica Forum TV, the cameras (at least the M7) are almost completely made in Portugal. The rangefinder is added in Germany. As it is the most expensive part, it is the biggest "Wertschöpfung" (don´t know the proper English term, it means: creating the largest part of a product´s value). AFAIK, for "Made in Germany" the Wertschöpfung is the main criterium- not that each single part derives from here. Regards Stefan
andybarton Posted July 23, 2009 Share #12 Posted July 23, 2009 They do enough final assembly to allow them to state "Made in Germany" butost of the actual work is done on Portugal
