Leica Running Team (Nike+)

I've decided to make a Leica Running Team and will post an article later on how to start running, become fit and loose weight. It's quite easy if done the right way.

If you visit my Digilux 2 page there's a link to the challenge at Nike+ website. It runs for a year, starting on August 1, 2009. And to have ones results in the challenge online at the Nike+ page and my Leica pages, you will need a Nike+ iPod. The challenge is simply to run the longest distance in a year.

But here's a link to the challenge on this page:

leica.overgaard.dk - Thorsten Overgaard's Leica Sites - Leica Digilux 2 sample photos and tests (as well as Panasonic DMC-LC1) - Page 1 of 3

My article on starting running and loosing weight will be posted later. Here's a shot from the movie "YES!" to get you in the mood (where there's a running team of photographers running and photographing at the same time).

Doug--wow, you are impressive! 5+ miles/day? Dang. I'm still working up to 5 miles. My knees aren't the best, so I can only jog 2-3 times a week.

I"m up for being part of the Leica Running Team! Sounds fun!

This will be fun. I thought Doug was all about fresh air and only that. 5 miles a day is quite impressive.

My goal will be running 40 miles a month.

I've been reading What I Talk About When I Talk About Running by Haruki Murakami - Hardcover - Random House who's a Japanese author who runs 250 kilometers a month and a marathon once a year. Great book for anyone slightly interested in running or writing or setting goals for them self.

For you folks like me with bad knees and backs you should consider getting yourself a nice road bicycle and pedal instead of run. A nice Italian road bike that is properly fitted to you is just as enjoyable to use as a Leica. I lost almost 40 lbs cycling in the last year, it works out to be about 1 pound lost per 100 miles of pedaling. Eventually I will get down to zero. Maybe we need a fitness section of this forum for the R users to participate in?

There are lots of ways to separate runners from their paychecks but the one I feel is most important is good running shoes. Don't skimp on this most important item! It pays to visit a good athletic shoe store and listen to their advice - and once you decide on a shoe, support the store that provided you with priceless knee-saving knowledge.

This topic is more-or-less related to photography. The late Galen Rowell considered good physical conditioning to be essential for his photographic work, and I agree!

As a former serious jogger (between 30 and 80 miles per week depending upon what race I was training for), I would love to join - but my knee is still gone. I will first lose weight on a home trainer (when my legs can go round and round) and see if I can start jogging later in the year.

Doug is 100% correct - do not skimp on jogging shoes. Bad knees are bad enough but shin splints are excruciating too.

Okay, it's on. We start the Nike+iPod today August 1 and I happens to be in the lead with this mornings 7 km run (We're rehearsing for a 5 km DHL Running Day in three weeks every Saturday - so that was handy for me ;-)

Anyhow, anyone who want's to join in, do so. And lets get pictures as well of it and from it.
