Does anyone have a list of the competitions (and exhibitions) that maybe of interest to enter in 2009 to 2010 timeframe.

> I am aware of the 2009 Oscar Barnak prize but this is for professionals only or below 25 years future pros.

> Oscar Barnak prize is normally awarded at the Arles event, which has been cancelled this year due to the recession.

> I also have just seen the possible Kodachrome competition featuring Yellow & Red (Kodachrome Branding colours) ...and I guess this will be forced towards those that use film.

> I am not aware of anything else.

The whole raison d'être of this competition is to use Kodachrome, so digital users are excluded. This is happening at the end of July - see Stefan's thread elsewhere (in the Film sub-forum, IIRC). There is no prize money involved with this competition - only "kudos"

There is also the regular "Barnack Challenge", for those members who use screw thread Leicas or their lenses. Again, the only winnings are the ability to choose the subject for the next Challenge.

The "One Challenge" (in Malta this year) (see in the Forum Meetings sub-section) does have a prize fund. Every entrant pays €10 into the pot and the winner takes all. In recent previous years, winners have donated the fund to charity, but that's not a pre-requisite.

There are, of course, dozens of competitions in photography magazines, or sponsored by dealers and manufacturers too.

Was it "forum specific" competitions that you were interested in, Frank?

If you read LFI or one of the other serious photography magazines, they will tell you about exhibitions being held in the coming months.

I read LFI and have seen the recent Oscar Barnak winner....but that is about it. I am generally interested in the competitions open to all ...not just Leica enthusiasts.

I am intrigued by the challenge to shoot photos on a theme chosen by the judges within a given timeframe. I am sure that I shall not win but the challenge excites me.

I once met a guy on a flight and he told me that his job was an artist with light....he then explained that he was the photographer behind the Martini ad with the ice cubes. I remain impressed by this person.

I have seen great photos in the forum already so I am looking at ways to extend myself over and above the technical stuff of UV IR filter's, sensor cleaning and lens choices...The more I dig the more I get excited to learn and a competition seems to me like a noble goal to focus ...so any ideas?

Why not come to Valletta in October?

There will be a couple of dozen of us there by the looks of it

Have a look at the One Challenge information. It's the biggest "competition" of the year on the forum. It doesn't have a "theme" as such, apart from the location. That changes every year.

if you want to organise a competition yourself, feel free to contact the Mods or Admin. You're very welcome to do so

Sounds like a good idea and I shall put it in the diary, but will not be able to confirm until nearer the date.

I have found various postings on the Malta event...but have not seen too much detail about it. Seems everyone is booking own accommodation (fine) and some like the Grand hotel Excelsior, others the Victoria, others an appartment,,,,,is there any more info as to what people plan to do each day. I saw the nominal date is the 17 Oct but is this a one day event or what?

We have been doing this for a number of years now. Each year we choose a different city in which to meet (we have “done” London, Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin, Krakow already). We are all in Bill Palmer’s debt for thinking of the idea in the first place. As “Entertainments Officer” he does a sterling job dreaming up things to do (he has something new coming in the Autumn, I know…)

The final details (such as venue to etc) are yet to be finalised, but in essence, the competition takes place on one day. This year, it’s Saturday 17th October. How long you choose to stay in Malta is entirely up to you, of course, and people are obviously free to stay wherever and with whomever they choose.

The day is very informal. We generally meet for a coffee mid morning, go off and do the Challenge, and then there is usually an evening meal organised for those staying over the weekend. The whole thing is really an excuse to go to somewhere nice for a couple of days and meet up with old friends over a beer or a glass of wine.

If you want to look at the details of the competition from LAST year, have a look at this page

http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/forum-member-meetings/59434-krakow-one-challenge-11-october-2008-a.html

In the first post, there is a link to a pdf explaining very clearly all the rules.

Apart from venue, and date, the rules will be the same this year.

While it was my pleasure to organise (with help!) the competition in 2007 and 2008, Carl Bretteville is the man for this year. No doubt, he will be posting a resume thread in the Meetings section shortly. Ivan has also offered to help with the venue, being on the ground in Valetta.

Nearer the time, he will also need an idea of numbers so that a suitable gathering place can be agreed.

So, it’s basically a case of “watch this space” for further announcements

Basically, we meet at 10:00 in a café, declare what body, film & lens combination we will use, pay our 10€, eat, drink and chat and admire equipment until it's time to go out and shoot, ususally between 14:00 and 16:00. A dinner is organized, or not, it's pretty laid back.

Its name says it all: one body, one lens, one roll, one image. Bill Palmer invented it in 2004 in London. It is deceptively simple as the field is totally open within a strict time frame. Come and try it: you'll be hooked.

Andy, it sounds like a great idea.I shall certainly watch the space. Can we use an M8 or must it be one film, one lens (definately a TriElmar!) and an M6 in my case?

...but a tri-elmar can only be used at one focal length, as can a zoom.

Regards,

Bill

My gosh ...If I manage to get away to Malta I'll have to think of another way to achieve a competitive advantage....talent is obviously out of the question!

Is digital M8 allowed (with Photoshop maybe?)

If people are shooting with 35mm slide film ...how do you get this processed the same day in Malta, or is this done after the event?

What are you on about, Frank? I have already told you digital is allowed. You just don't read what people have told you.

The rules are perfectly clear - if you read them. You HAVE read them, I assume? You HAVE clicked on the link to the pdf?

One camera, one lens, one film, one shot. A Tri-Elmar is 3 lenses (in one), as you well know. So, choose which focal length you want to use, stick with it and that's fine.

Who said anything about having film processed on the day?

Frankly, Frank, I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that the only reason you post on this forum is to waste people's time and patience. The latter is running thin in my case.
