Got an old beauty today

Just bought my first Summilux. I have had Lux Lust for some time and had been thinking of getting one for film use for a while, but as I have a Summicron and use digital so much I could not justify the expense.

But I saw such a vintage beauty today I was taken with it. An early version I in great condition. Had a nice hat too.

I tried it on in the shop on one of their demo M8.2s (must admit since I sold my M8 I had forgotten how slow those can be lol). Compared it (most unscientifically) to the new Nokton f1.1 and the Zeiss f1.5. For my money, at f1.4, the Zeiss was by for the sharpest (and pretty too), the Nokton was sharper than the old Lux, but I preferred the feel of the Lux to the Nokton, and just about to the Zeiss. Plus it was a few hundred pounds less.

So here it is, and now I only use film in a few weeks I hope to show some photos from it

Apols posted some of this in another section

but I just bought my a lovely Summilux 50 version 1 S/N 168xxxx (making it one of the first 1959 ones I believe). But it's optics are fine and it gives good cream

It was apparently owned by a collecter who didn't use it but kept it in immaculate condition. Apparently the fact it came with original hood was a bonus. Certainly looks nice but I bought it to use not look at - although I must admit I had to stop myself buying a chrome M6 (have a black one) to adorn it

Anyway can't help showing her off a bit

Very nice, I like the signature of this lens a lot. I had the v.2 of this lens for a few years but sold it recently when I got a v.3 as I hankered after the 0.7M closest focus. I already have too many 50's but I do like this lens...

...sorry it is. I realise there is some history/politics there and I certainly don't want to get involved in that (not least as I think Ivor, who I have met on Leica Users day is a great bloke and if his shop was near me I would be in there all the time). It' just I am a regular in Aperture camera cafe round the corner and occasionally go and browse all the other local shops. Even went into York cameras yesterday and picked up a lovely Weston meter and Kodachrome film. "That shop" is usually too expensive for me, but I would have been surprised to see a lens in this condition for the price it was anywhere, and having tried it I had to buy it.

I wasn't even looking to buy a lens to be honest, but it jumped out from the cabinet to me.

Great to see you buying M equipment again. Does look like a lovely lens. About the only lens I have never parted with is my lux-35-asph - slightly different look and feel but I can still affine with your affliction!

PS I wonder how long it will be before you re-acquire a M8????

Nice to hear from you Louis

I'm generally getting back into using RF equipment and film again generally. Just because I love using the cameras, lenses and using film.

I'm still very happy with my 5D Mk II and it is everything I want in a digital camera. But using a nice small RF with a good lens and feeling the constraint of a particular type of film etc does get me working in a different and more interesting way. I half thought when I sold my M8 and a few of my lenses (including one to you) and got the 5D II that might be the end of RFs for me. But taking the 5DII and M6 together with me to Burma earlier this year was the best lesson in why continuing to use s small good film camera is for me.

To be fair they were very helpful and kind to me too. They let me play with a new M8 and the lens I bought, as well as the Nokton f1.1 and Zeiss f1.5 before I bought the lens. I would not have wanted to buy it otherwise.

The only problem is, having played with the Zeiss 50 1.5 I don't for a moment regret buying the Lux, but I am tempted to go and get a Zeiss 1.5 one of these days which I guess is mad GAS

I've never had any problems with "that shop" ... on the contrary, have found the gentleman there quite helpful. Is this a case of, 'Give a dog ... etc.' ?

Cheers

I was in there on Saturday, bought a 200mm Telyt f/4 in Exc ++ condition, no one else in London had one. I have not had any trouble with them and in fact they were very obliging when I bought my 21mm elmarit asph. (used) and the shoe fell off the finder within days.

You have to take a lot they tell you with a pinch of salt, but thats salesmen for you.....

Crikey Nick I'm REALLY jealous - just started on a Summilux 50 hunt, and feeling that I really shouldn't spend any more money on Leica gear for a while, then you show us pictures like these... :(

Anyway - I missed the story about selling the M8. What happened - I remember you as a great enthusiast of the camera? I'm enjoying mine very much right now, but lust to get a film camera back (I very foolishly sold both of mine cheap because I thought I'd never use them) means that I'm constantly cruising all the online stores...

Loved to feel of the M8 and the fact I could use M lenses on it

Just did not like the noise at high isos, speed and battery life of the camera (which I find slower than using a film M) and the fact it has a cropped sensor.

I bought the 5D II (which I use with Contax and Leica R lenses, as well as Zuikos and Canon Ls). Felt I could not justify the M8 being used as a second digital camera so sold it to help pay for the 5D II

I am very happy with the 5D II, but getting back into using M rangefinders with film, which I prefer to the M8 and often to the 5D too.
