yanidel Posted July 18, 2009 Share #1 Posted July 18, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) This morning I went for a walk with the Epson R-D1 as it had been a long time since I last used it. The M8 is a superior camera on almost every point but there is one thing that is absolutely wonderful on the R-D1, that is the 1:1 finder. It really makes you feel the camera is just the extention of your eye as the view is not altered. Also it allows you to shoot with both eyes open which is great to be completely immersed in the environment. I would pay to have a 1:1 finder on the M8, that would probably mean that the widest lens with framelines would be a 28mm but I don't care, this is a trade-off that is fair. Why does Leica not propose 1:1 finders on the M8 ? Would like to know how other members feel about the 1:1 view, isn't it something that would enhance the picture taking experience ? Advertisement Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 Hi yanidel, Take a look here 1:1 finder on M8 ?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Shootist Posted July 18, 2009 Share #2 Posted July 18, 2009 Never used a R-D1 but are you sure it has a 1:1 finder. Not even the M3 had a 1:1 finder, I think it was .96x and the widest lens you could use with built in framelines was the 50mm. The simple answer is you wouldn't have framelines for most of the normally used lenses with a 1:1 finder.
holgerf Posted July 18, 2009 Share #3 Posted July 18, 2009 Just get a Leice III and you have the 1:1 finder. Widest lens: 50 mm ;-)

tomasis7 Posted July 18, 2009 Share #5 Posted July 18, 2009 yanidel, I understand well how you feel.. I still have rd1 and considered to sell but it is so hard to part with that 1:1 vf. I can accept even 0,85x of m7 or eventual digital M. The problem is that I became spoiled by excellent m3 vf and bright focusing patch so rd1 patch become more of problem for me lately. I guess you get what you pay for. I think Leica will release 0,85x some day in fullframe camera 2nd generation or so. Maybe there is easier to change vf and maybe allow a la carte like 0.53x(?i forgot)) 0.72x 0.85x as it is available for m7.
Marty Posted July 18, 2009 Share #6 Posted July 18, 2009 Why not use the 1.4 magnifier?
j. borger Posted July 18, 2009 Share #7 Posted July 18, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) It's very difficult going back to the M8 finder if you shot the R-d1 for a couple of days! Not only the 1:1 but also the single framelines in the R-d1 make it far more pleasant to use.
j. borger Posted July 18, 2009 Share #8 Posted July 18, 2009 Why not use the 1.4 magnifier? Is not the same. With the magnifier you get that klunk on the finder and de viewfinder is darker with magnifier. .

Not only the 1:1 but also the single framelines in the R-d1 make it far more pleasant to use. Agree. Only solution for Leica would be enlarge the VF window the same way Epson did but Visoflex and lenses with goggles would not fit any more then... Yes, on top of that, the framelines become to close to the borders.
yanidel Posted July 18, 2009 Author Share #11 Posted July 18, 2009 yanidel, I understand well how you feel.. I still have rd1 and considered to sell but it is so hard to part with that 1:1 vf. I almost sold mine too . Met with a buyer that was hesitant on the price, he told me he would give me an answer the next day. I got home and decided it was no more for sale. Don't regret, unless cash is badly needed, I'll keep it as backup and memorablia (first digital rangefinder).

I can deal without I took some portraits this afternoon with the 50mm framelines ... it makes such a difference ... you really feel connected to the subjected, almost forget the camera. lct Posted July 18, 2009 Share #13 Posted July 18, 2009 Visoflex and lenses with googles ... I can deal without... So can i but others? After the R10 debacle i doubt that Leica will spit again on its legacy customers before long.

Make the 1:1 part of a "à la carte" M8 and everybody is happy !
lct Posted July 18, 2009 Share #15 Posted July 18, 2009 With the current size of M8's VF we could not get 1:1 plus 40mm coverage i'm afraid. I guess the Epsons will remain unique for a long time.
