6 months with the M8 (first post).

Hi everybody,

This is my first post here, so please forgive me for any break from established protocol.

I have been using my M8 now for almost six months, and have become addicted to the experience.

Almost six months ago, I sold off my D3 and my pro Nikon lenses and bought the M8 and the Elmarit 28. It was a crazy move, because I didn't know how I would get along with this decidedly different photographic animal.

But, among other things, I had this vision of driving through the Southwest US desert with this portable camera by my side. I had grown tired of carrying the D3, even though I believed it was the greatest camera I had ever used.

I finally made the trip last week, departing from my Canadian homeland for a week. And although I now own a 50 lux asph, I kept it simple and packed just the M8 and the Elmarit 28.

The point of this? I guess I'm just excited about my 2nd photographic life and wanted to share some photos.

If anybody is interested, please have a look at them:

Thanks for your time,

Peter.

Hello Peter and welcome,

Thank you for sharing your photo's with us, very nice and that's one road trip I'd like to take sometime in the future.

Like you, I too took the decision to ditch the D3 and many pro lenses including the 14/24, 200 f2 VR and 400 f2.8 afs2. I took advantage of the rebates and bought my first M8 last

November, shortly followed by the 28mm Elmarit Asph, then a 50mm Lux Asph and a 75mm APO Cron , in Jan I bought a second M8 while the then higher ( £650 ) rebate was still running ...... this "M thing" is very addictive, but I did get some very sizable cheques off of Leica which helped soften the blow :)

Whilst I no longer have the focal length coverage that I had with the Nikon gear I also realized that I didn't need them, most were the result of "GAS" anyway.

I have to say I have not for a single minute regretted switching systems and feel that I now have the best systems for my needs ( it's taken many years and switching of systems to get here though ) .... the M8's for everyday and travel, and a 'blad H1 and P21 back for when weight is not an issue, plus only one raw convertor to learn and use for both - C1 ;)

The M8 has relit my `"inner fire" for photography and it is great to see that you too are enjoying using yours. BTW, that 50mm Lux Asph is some lens wouldn't you agree, so sharp and I love the way it draws.

May you and your M8 produce many years of memorable images

Simon

Another newbie here - I enjoyed your crisp scenics and the lovely little one, and also your thoughts about this camera relative to the big guns.

I too have a D3 and a shelf full of great Nikkors. I tried using a D90 for a smaller travel cam, but when I got an M8 it was immediately clear that it would take that role and many more. Love the D3 and will likely keep it forever as it's wonderful for my attempts at shooting auto racing and such, but the M8 is just more fun to use for most situations when I take photographs.

My lens kit is close to yours as well: 28 Elmarit ASPH, 50 Summilux ASPH, and a 15 CV M-mount - and I love what I'm seeing from all of them.

Hope you continue to enjoy your new kit.

Hi, I'm also a Leica newbie - bought an M8.2 & summicron 50 in March (also picked up a D-Lux4 at the same time). Have still got a cupboard full of expensive and very good Canon gear, but I also got fed up of carrying it around with me - I'm very much a hobbyist and usually have to fit my photography in with family walks, holidays etc, and a rucksack full of SLR kit was not getting anything like the use it deserved.

Haven't got round to selling it yet, as I can't bring myself to take the loss on this pristine gear (!), and I still use bits & pieces every so often.

However, I'll be honest and say I've not got the hang of the M8.2 yet - still finding my technique is often way too slow and I've missed a lot of opportunities that I think I would have nailed with the 5D. That's part of the learning I guess, and I'll not blame the gear as I can see on this site (and in the OP's postings) that the end results can be staggering with this gear. And I really want to learn.

Also, I'm often very nervous about taking this expensive Leica out into the public! Seriously, it worries me, and in fact I often just grab the D-Lux 4 instead. Kind of defeats the object, I know.

I agree with Marco, 99.8% of the population, no make that 99.9%, don't have a clue on i) what a Leica camera is, ii) let alone how much they are worth.

On our NL l-camera-forum meeting in The Hague we were taking pictures using a impressive & very valuable collection of stuff including a lot of M8s and the only comments we got were "how quaint that these guys are still using those old (non-digital) cameras". Fine by me.

The people that do recognise the brand usually still don't know the M8.

I agree too.

Without exception, everybody that's ever commented on my M8 has assumed it's a film camera, even though the back LCD is clearly visible. Incredible really....nobody seems to pay any attention to it.

I keep it in a leather 1/2 case with a neck strap, so it's always on me, which adds to the peace of mind.

Peter.

Question: if you're driving, why does the size of the camera matter?

It has nothing to do with transport. People hike up mountains for days with heavier equipment. But spend a day taking pictures with a camera in your hands or around your neck/shoulder and suddenly every ounce counts!
