leica dream Posted July 8, 2009 Share #1 Posted July 8, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) As a casual photographer I have been using my V-Lux1 in JPEG mode but as I hear so much about RAW I want to try moving there. PS Elements has been fine for me so far, but shall I be able to use that satisfactorily with RAW or do I need the full Photoshop? I read DIGITAL CAMERA magazine regularly and they seem to discuss PS facilities which I have not encountered in Elements. By going RAW it sounds like my results would be finer but is that at the expense of many hours at my PC? Any advice (or encouragement) welcome. Advertisement Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 Hi leica dream, Take a look here RAW with Photoshop Elements v6. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
bill_murray Posted July 8, 2009 Share #2 Posted July 8, 2009 I managed with PS elements just fine - whether raw or jpegs - it has enough tools and capabilities to if you want to learn post processing techniques - but also has simple and useful quick fixes (crop, contrast and light adjustments for example) if you want to improve display of your photos, or print them off, yet still have time to go for a pint at the pub. PS is just too "heavyweight" and life a little too short - but that is a personal view. I did move on from PS elements to Lightroom - more as a catalogue tool but it works supremely well with my Imac - and is intuitive to use. You'll be fine with PS elements though for Raw ..it's a good tool.
sfokevin Posted July 8, 2009 Share #3 Posted July 8, 2009 I use Lightroom & PhotoShop Elements in tandem.... I find the full blown PS too complicated... I should also say that I only need PS Elements 1% of the time A good thing about Lightroom for a beginner is that it makes no change to the original DNG... No initial converting and such... You then can play to your hearts content and the hit the reset button to bring you right back to what the camera shot!...
leica dream Posted July 9, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted July 9, 2009 Thanks for that reassurance guys. I have seen Lightroom mentioned a lot on the forum so I shall look into that too. Richard
wda Posted July 11, 2009 Share #5 Posted July 11, 2009 I would definitely go for Lightroom but don't underestimate the transitional learning curve. However, it will be worthwhile. I think you can grow into LR and find that you can do so much more to your files, both processing and cataloging.
