jimbo035 Posted July 7, 2009 Share #1 Posted July 7, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Theres a chance to swap my D-Lux 4 for a LC-1, but I wonder if the firmware is different, just as with the D-Lux 4 and Panasonic LX3. I daresay there's no difference between the RAW files, (I'm perfectly content with the D-Lux 4's JPEGs) and I could be waiting forever for a chance to swap the D-lux 4 for a Digilux 2 (within the UK, that is)

earleygallery Posted July 8, 2009 Share #4 Posted July 8, 2009 Not this old chestnut again! Amazing with how many of us have the Panasonic or Leica variants of a given camera - and some have both - that there has so far been no conclusive evidence of the supposed 'difference' between firmware. Someone posted images taken with a Dlux4 and the Panny version - I couldn't tell them apart. When I bought a Panny version of the D1 I recall reading on this site that if the colour/contrast/sharpness were set on low it would be the equivalent of the Leica on 'normal' settings. Again I've not seen anything pictorial to back this up.
John Thawley Posted July 8, 2009 Share #5 Posted July 8, 2009 When I bought my Digilux 2 I was told by a Leica enthusiast that the Panasonic firmware was different (and inferior) Different yes. Inferior? Absolutely not. Both exceptionally good quality JPEG... most here "probably" prefer the Leica conversion. Firmware JPEG conversion is no different than ME converting my RAW image and OVERGAARD converting his RAW conversion. He'll tweak his to his own taste and I'll tweak mine to my taste. That is all Firmware is doing. Leica developer's taste vs. Panasonic's developer's taste. That's all it is... "taste." If you can buy the camera... like the camera... don't let the firmware be a deciding factor. JT
Guest flatfour Posted July 8, 2009 Share #6 Posted July 8, 2009 Yes - I think perhaps it was a salesman trying to persuade me to buy a Digilux 2. (I'd already bought mine in Germany) I wanted to know whether the firmware was different. He was emphatic that it was Leica's own and was not shared. Of course he said the Leica firmware was better. What are the facts on this ?. Is there anyone from Leica themselves on this forum who can give us the truth ?

dugby Posted July 9, 2009 Share #8 Posted July 9, 2009 Marketing spin...... The firmware could be identical, and one contain the Leica boot-up logo and the other display the Lumix logo and now they are absolutely different !!!! One thing's for sure marketeers, resellers and users will not really know, even though they claim to have insider knowledge. Only the FW code developers will know, many Leica or Panasonic personnel would NOT know. I work for a manufacturer (24 years now) of similar technology and know the games the marketing folks must play to differentiate our products from those which we badge engineer for other vendors.
