Nick De Marco Posted July 18, 2009 Share #41 Posted July 18, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm in. For my sins I have never shot Kodachrome before (only Velvia). Got my first (and probably last) roll in London today for £13.99 Want to use it with my new Summilux I got today too but I will be in Italy that weekend - and post from Italy is not that great. Is it OK if I shoot in the given times but post film off when back in UK on Tuesday 4 August? Thanks Nick
Advertisement Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 Hi Nick De Marco, Take a look here Competition based on Kodachrome film. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
flavio Posted July 19, 2009 Share #42 Posted July 19, 2009 Hi Flavio, my test roll (also used to check the exposure meter of my M6, which is spot on ) needed three weeks (I just got it back). There was a date stamp, which implies the film was in Kodak's hand two days after I sent it. If you happen to pass Roma shortly after you exposed your roll, I can share a tip from a friend who comes from Rome - if you post your roll in the Vatican, there is a good chance it will travel faster. I'm not sure though, if a special stamp is required to make it travel with angel's wings Stefan hi stefan, great info! :-) i do not think i'll be able to go to rome. in those days our highways will probably be extremely busy and i'll stay @ home in the tyrrenic sea. unfortunately that is an almost remote small town and probably that it will not help me a lot. but your idea like me a lot and i've decided to bring along with me even a leica mini during my ireland trip that will start tomorrow morning! i feel myself as a reborn guy (at least in the photo field! :-) flavio

ivorlee Posted July 25, 2009 Share #44 Posted July 25, 2009 I just checked, B&H in New York still have stock for KR-135 36 Kodakchrome for US$11.20 each before shipping. I worked out the shipping cost is costlier than the film itself, even if I place order for 3 rolls! I live in Australia. Any OZ here in the forum knows where to get one in Australia? Cheers...Ivor
A_E_Darling Posted July 26, 2009 Share #45 Posted July 26, 2009 Hello JBA, I'm happy to relax the starting time, for example to Friday at noon, if this helps. The finishing time is Set In Stone. Observant members of the bar might guess, how this time was set. I guess nobody in the world will have much fun with a 64ASA film after 8pm this time of the year anyhow.... Since two years, I'm taking part in the One Challenge, where we have only two hours of shooting (some participants seem to follow the original 'one hour' rule even). In my experience, this restriction is pushing creativity very much. It is actually a very good photographic exercise (and also lots of fun). Kind regards Stefan Hi Stefan, I think you may be a little off with the 8.00 pm remark. Here in south west UK the sun sets after 9 pm at this time of year. In more Northerly latitudes it is later still. Arctic circle members will confirm. Also 64 ASA is less of a problem if you have a tripod or a Noctilux. I did not see a ban on time exposures when I scanned the rules. May I suggest you leave it as in a post box no later than xx. We are going to have to trust each other on that, my Kodachrome goes to Waynes via Switzerland anyway.
StS Posted July 26, 2009 Author Share #46 Posted July 26, 2009 Hi A_E, the rules actually say: Shooting will start on Friday, 31st July 2009 at noon (12:00) your local time. The exposed roll must be in the postbox (or the envelope) for sending to the lab by Sunday, 2nd August 2009 at 8:15pm (20:15) your local time latest. (A jocular remark from my side will not cancel the rules. ) I have attached the latest set again, there was a small change, since posting and voting need to start and stop at the same time for everyone, regardless of one's time zone. We need to make sure everyone has posted his image when voting starts. The rules say now: Posting starts Sunday 27th September 2009 5pm UTC and ends Sunday 4th October 2009 5pm UTC Stefan Rules Kodachrome Challenge.pdf
JBA Posted July 28, 2009 Share #47 Posted July 28, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sorry, but I really do not understand the rule about the film having to be posted by 8:15 on Aug. 2 when posting for the contest is not till the end of September. I just sent 18 rolls of Kodachrome to Dwayne's for processing yesterday, so my next batch is not going out till later in August when I've taken another dozen or more rolls. Sending one solitary roll would push my costs unacceptably high ($30+ per roll), so it's simply not happening. Really, what does it matter when we send in the film as long as the photo is shot within the specified time frame and posted to the gallery on time? andybarton Posted July 28, 2009 Share #48 Posted July 28, 2009 Neither do I, but I will take part, and I won't worry about what time the film is posted is it really necessary for you to post to Dwaynes in a batch, if this prevents you entering the competition (which I assume you do, judging by your interest in this thread)? JBA Posted July 28, 2009 Share #49 Posted July 28, 2009 Andy, the reason I send in batches is that shipping costs are roughly the same whether I send one roll or a dozen, so sending batches of a dozen optimizes shipping costs. Sending smaller batches would nickel-and-dime me to death. With the amount of Kodachrome I shoot, it would be a shame not to be able to participate in the contest because of a technicality. I'm assuming the rule was conceived for people using pre-paid mailers. This is not an option here. On a Sunday in Tokyo, the only place I'd be depositing any kind of film is the fridge. StS Posted July 28, 2009 Author Share #50 Posted July 28, 2009 Hi JBA, I guess this discussion was in another thread, since a lot of people in the US do not use prepaid envelopes but bring their films to the local labs, the rule had been changed then to: Shooting will start on Friday, 31st July 2009 at noon (12:00) your local time. The exposed roll must be in the postbox (or the envelope) for sending to the lab by Sunday, 2nd August 2009 at 8:15pm (20:15) your local time latest. It will be up to you, what you define to be an 'envelope'. Seriously, the important thing is to have the same time frame for everyone (one weekend, in this case) for the competition roll to be exposed. An unorthodox form of the 'envelope' will probably not give a competitive advantage... Looking forward to your competition entry Stefan
JBA Posted July 28, 2009 Share #51 Posted July 28, 2009 Hi Stefan, Perhaps I've been interpreting that rule too literally. The film will be out of camera and in the fridge marked with the note "Kodachrome Challenge" by the designated time on the 2nd. Thanks for clarifying. andybarton Posted July 28, 2009 Share #52 Posted July 28, 2009 Stefan You might want to make it clear when voting comes round that any voter making fewer than 3 votes will have all their votes disallowed. This caused some issues at the last One Challenge, and needs to be stated clearly up-front. Unless you allow people to do that of course. Rules are up to you - it's your Challenge! Looking forwards to the weekend. Just hope the weather is up for it too
StS Posted July 28, 2009 Author Share #53 Posted July 28, 2009 Thank you for pointing this out, Andy. The rule below was indeed meant to avoid the situation we had during voting for the One Challenge. Please observe these points for valid voting: Three points for the best, two points for the second and one point for the third best picture One vote per member No vote for your own image All three votes (best, second and third) must be given to three differentimages. To make it clear, a vote will be invalid, if it does not follow the rules above. I will repeat this, when we close posting and open voting. By the way - Andreas has activated the link to the Challenge now: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/kodachrome-challenge/
StS Posted July 28, 2009 Author Share #54 Posted July 28, 2009 Hi Stefan, Perhaps I've been interpreting that rule too literally. The film will be out of camera and in the fridge marked with the note "Kodachrome Challenge" by the designated time on the 2nd. Thanks for clarifying. Jonathan You are welcome. A fridge will qualify as an envelope as well. Stefan
StS Posted July 28, 2009 Author Share #55 Posted July 28, 2009 Stefan(...) Rules are up to you - it's your Challenge! I guess it is every participant's Challenge. I will mainly count the votes. The rules are Bill's by 95% anyhow... Looking forwards to the weekend. Just hope the weather is up for it too Nice to have you in. Also hoping for good weather - I recognized to be a bit out of training at 64ASA, when I exposed a test roll some weeks ago. Stefan
