I always check every lens after I have bought it with a lens focus chart, not for "fun" but for exactly the same reason as I would check the cutting edge of a chisel after I have taken it out of my tool box - to see if it is fit for purpose. With lenses I also want to be sure I have got what I have paid for, especially in the case of Leica lenses, where I have paid quite a lot. After earlier experience, I now take an M8 body to the shop with me, so I can do a rough and ready test on the spot. Sure you can focus bracket but sometimes the moment will have passed before you get your in-focus shot. Big Louis I am not getting at you - different strokes for different folks.

I agree with what you say. My point is that if your expectation is that you'll get sharp pictures as a matter of course then this lens will inevitably disappoint. Stopped down to f2 the lens is very nicely sharp, wide open it does get rather soft. Combined with the very narrow depth of field even though I've owned it for only a few hours, it is obvious that this is not an easy lens to work with. But then, extreme lenses like this require a degree of use and familiarity in order to get good results.

Louis,

I am very tempted by the new Nokton. Its form factor fits my hand much better than the even fatter old Noctilux and its price fits my pocket much better than the new Noctilux. However I will only buy one like you from a UK dealer where I can try one first. My luck on CV lenses has been so bad to date that I would be certain to get another "stereo" one like Sbelyaev did above.

No, he doesn't.

Following my experience with the new 28 Ultron (two duds in a row from a German authorised dealer), I asked him if he could check a lens prior to sending it to me and he refused.

Cheers,

Uwe

what kind of problems they had?

While I don't actually know Stephen, maybe because live in the same city... So far I have never received a problematic product from him. And the few problem posts about the new 1.1 while surely entirely accurate and troubling, do not to me indicate a problem with the lens shipments in general... Simply because IF I received a bad lens I would be posting about that experience in less than 30 minutes... I suspect that several hundred excellent Nokton 1.1 have shipped and is being used by shooters around the US just about now.

..... That clearly do not justify getting a bad lens... just saying that I don't think bad lenses is the rule here.
