Advertisement Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 Hi vanhulsenbeek, Take a look here A new UV/IR filter solution from Solms for the WATE?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Nicoleica Posted June 19, 2009 Share #2 Posted June 19, 2009 Looking in the English version, I believe that they are telling you to use the same solution as for the Super-Elmar 18. For that they are saying, fit a filter to the lens, and then screw the hood into that.

For that they are saying, fit a filter to the lens, and then screw the hood into that. Ah, but that filter for the SE18 is a very special filter (size E58 according to LFI) with a special thread that sure will not fit on the WATE. And a normal filter will not fit on the WATE as well because the lens protrudes beyond the sunshade thread. The thread for a special WATE filter should be more in the vicinity of 52 mm (the Milich adapter uses a E49 filter). Anyone knows if a special WATE filter, akin tot the SE18 filter, has been announced?

E thread is a standarized thread. .75 pitch iirc in the larger sized filters, 0.5 pitch in the smaller ( i seem to recall that the pitch change is at 37 mm.) Nicoleica Posted June 19, 2009 Share #6 Posted June 19, 2009 It's not very clear in the text, but I don't think that they are saying use the filter for the 18, just use the same method. I'm not sure what size filter fits the WATE though.
jaapv Posted June 19, 2009 Share #7 Posted June 19, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Again: standarized thread filters will not fit on the WATE No- of course not with the front lens element. The only thing I am saying is that a filter or lens with an E designation uses a standarized thread.

I'm not sure what size filter fits the WATE though. If they suggest using the same method, without a special filter being available, they are mixing up things big time. marknorton Posted June 19, 2009 Share #9 Posted June 19, 2009 I like the way LFI credits Solms for the Super-Elmar filter solution which is an exact copy of the solution we collectively devised here for the WATE. If I had time, I'd find my post where I first showed a sketch of it and a spreadsheet confirming how large the filter had to be and how close to the front element. It was of course John Milich who measured Guy Mancuso's lens and refined the idea into a finished product - put the filter on the lens with the hood on the front if it and forget it. We all know that neither filter solution will work FF so if the M9 comes out still needing an IR filter, we'll be back in the business of looking for another solution to the oversized filter holder and filter and the cheap piece of plastic to keep the peep-hole reflections out. It's interesting that, camera aside, this (Super-Elmar) filter holder is the first Leica product which will not work on a FF camera. I think what LFI are saying is that Leica should introduce a corresponding solution for the WATE.
Nicoleica Posted June 19, 2009 Share #10 Posted June 19, 2009 I've just looked on the Leica website, and they are listing a 49mm slim filter for the Tri-Elmar. Could this be the one?
marknorton Posted June 19, 2009 Share #11 Posted June 19, 2009 Nicole, that's not a UV IR filter and in any case, the Tri-Elmar has a male thread so that the filter screws onto the front of the lens, no into the front of the lens as it would with a female thread. The standard Leica WATE solution is a huge (67mm) male-female adapter which screws onto the front of the lens and the 67mm filters screws into it. The problem is that someone decided to put a couple of view-holes in the filter holder which cause stray reflections and nobody bothered to ask about a lens hood and lens cap. Leica fixed the view hole problem by issuing a thin plastic ring to block them off but there's never been a hood or lens cap. To call it a half-baked solution is to say it is better than it is and the Milich filter adapter is great.
Nicoleica Posted June 19, 2009 Share #12 Posted June 19, 2009 Thanks Mark, I was just wondering if that list meant that a 49mm filter would fit. I don't have a WATE myself, so I'm just blundering around in the dark here. My apologies to anyone for any mis-information.
vanhulsenbeek Posted June 19, 2009 Author Share #13 Posted June 19, 2009 I think what LFI are saying is that Leica should introduce a corresponding solution for the WATE. If true - and I believe you instantly - not very well done by such an 'authoritive' magazine My only problem with the Milich solution is that when lots of light are coming onto the lens - as in shooting towards the sun - the rather profuse white lettering on the front lens barrel causes reflections via the filter. This was discussed here before, and rather ignored (perhaps by those who do not want to read such things, but not by you) and the SE18 filter, because of that reason, now sports the black plastic ring solution Personally, I think that John Milich should make such a ring available to his customers. If at cost: no problem for me) I heard that the two new 1.4 WA's have the lettering moved to the side, perhaps for the above describe reason: well done! All this shows however that there is a communication problem between several Leica R&D/Marketing people: why was a problem recognized for the 1.4 WA's and at the same time ignored for the SE18? marknorton Posted June 19, 2009 Share #14 Posted June 19, 2009 I haven't seen the reflection problem myself, but it would be possible to paint the rim of the lens matt (flat) black, though I personally would not. Alternatively, painting a black ring around the rim of the filter glass would also help. Depends on how stead your hand is!

Hello Nicole The E49 slim line filter is for the MATE .If the FF M does come the MATE will need a slimline UV/IR. Brian

Thanks! I have just spoken to Leica in Milton Keynes and at present the only filter solution from Leica is the 67 mm holder and filter.( Leica also supply a "mask" which blanks of the holes to stop reflections. The Mask is a rubber ring which fits inside the holder. The mask was not originally supplied with the filter holder. The best solution at present for an M8 is the JM holder and 49mm UV/IR filter. If Leica produce a filter which will fit between the lens and the hood all well and good. Brian
barneybm Posted June 29, 2009 Share #18 Posted June 29, 2009 Has anyone with a WATE seen anything like this? I used the WATE shooting into a dark area. The sun was behind me. The lens has a 67 mm holder and filter. I understand that the light might possibly have bounced off the filter into the lens -- but what's that electric diagram look in the red reflection. I do not get this effect when I shoot directly into the sun. I would appreciate any comments. (The car is about to be restored.)
