C1 4.8.1 tips for a novice

I am starting my uphill battle with C1 4.8.1 (the free upgrade of C1 LE not PRO).

 

There are a few things people might be able to help me with as listed below:

 

1) If I click the 'quick' adjustment tab I get camera ICC = M8, there is also M8 + UV/IR as a optional choice. Presumably I should use the latter if I have the UV/IR filter mounted? As I always use UV/IR filters can I set this ICC as the default? I can't find a way to do that. Choosing M8 UV/IR gives a slightly different color.

 

2) Process tab, I can select tiff or jpeg output file, I have set to jpeg 75% as I have no need for 6mb jpeg files, jpeg 75 gives roughly 1.5 Mb is that OK for "normal" use? Not for A1 prints obviously.

 

3) Output color space is sRGB?

 

4) How do I process DNG's to B/W? With C1LE there was an easy option to do that but I can't seem to find that in C1 4.

 

5) At present the programme is generating a sub-folder called "capture one" which seems to contain large amounts of data. Smallish files with processing settings of the DNGs in the main folder, but also what appear to be backup files of about 10Mb each. I thought there was a way to embed the DNG processing settings into the DNG file itself. Is that true & would it save space?

 

One interesting advantage in C1 4 is the possibility to make "variants" i.e. multiple versions of the same DNG file(s), any comments on how you would use this in postprocessing?

 

I will continue wading throught the manual but this is not 'light reading'. Any comments you may have are much appreciated.

1.I haven't found that out yet. What helps is to go into C1's profiles file and delete all non-relevant colour profiles.

2. Process: I regard C1 as the RAW convertor and always have it opening the output in Photoshop. That means one should set the output to TIFF, 16 bits, aRGB. You are seriously crippling yourself here.

3.See above

4. In the profiles "pull-down you'll find "effects" That is where the B&W profiles are hidden.

5. That folder never bothered me. I left it as it is.

 

Take note of the little "save" triangles in the various right-hand corners and all other little clickable things, like little menu icons.

 

You can make variants and open them in PS and use them as layers for local effects and pseudo-HDR.

Concerning point 1) there is a simple solution:

 

After installing C1, but before starting the prog, go to folder C:\Program Files\Phase One\Capture One 4\Color Profiles\DSLR\ (or whatever is similar on a Mac), then:

- First, rename LeicaM8-Generic.ICC to LeicaM8-Generic-No-Filter.ICC

- Then, rename LeicaM8-Generic UV-IR.ICC to LeicaM8-Generic.ICC

 

That’s all: each time you open C1, the automatic “Leica generic” profile is now WITH UV/IR filter.

(Should you need it, you still have the option in the menu to change to your new “LeicaM8-Generic-No-Filter”)

 

I use four M lenses, all with UV/IR filter and none coded: this trick originally posted by “Mitcholankov” some months ago saved my day.

 

Note: When installing future C1 upgrades, don’t forget each time to go back to C:\Program Files\Phase One\Capture One 4\Color Profiles\DSLR\ and delete the “LeicaM8-Generic UV-IR.ICC” you created earlier before running the trick again.

Ahhh, clever that means I can also rename to:

LeicaM9-Generic.ICC

 

Which makes me mentally prepared for the transition before it comes:D

 

I doubt you will need that profile ;)

For one thing C1 does not have a print module/interface. So no printing from C1 and you'll need another progam to print with.

Yes C1 is not enough.

Max, these two files are shown as ".icm" and not ".icc" in my C1 4.8.1

Gives me a chance for a self-quote ;)

The files to rename are of course xx.icm

Thanks, Max. You guys who know your way around this stuff knew it was a typo instantly, I'm sure, but we newbies follow along in cookbook manner and get thrown off course easily. :p

Have you searched for *.ICM or *.ICC, if that is what the extension is on a Mac. Certainly Mac's have a search feature/function in there file management program and I suspect the wildcard characters are the same. If not then whatever character Mac's (Linux) use for the star character function in Windows.

Ahhh, this came up a few weeks ago. All the C1 profiles are found on a Mac by right-clicking the C1 application:

 

Capture One 4 beta and camera profiles - Open Photography Forums
