batmobile Posted May 29, 2009 Share #1 Posted May 29, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am wondering if anyone can comment on the 24 3.8 asph (not interested in the 2.8) in terms that I might be able to relate to. I am interested in this lens as a possible companion to a 35/75 in a simplified 2-3 lens outfit. I am not concerned about resolution and distortion – obviously it is amazing, but I am wondering about rendering and contrast. I have a Zeiss 21 2.8, 28 biogon, 35 f2 and 50 f2 planar and used to own a 50 1.4 lux asph and am wondering if anyone with hand on experience of these might be able to make comparisons in ‘look’ and contrast. Does the 24 3.8 asph have very high contrast like the 28 Elmarit asph, or 21/25 biogon, or is it more modest, like the 28 asph cron, or even 35 2.5 Summarit? I am trying to think of what I might pair it with and what that would cost. I shoot only B&W film and so if anyone can help that would be greatly apperciated. kinda hoping to open up the gap between 35mm and leave the 21 and 28 at home sometimes. If only Zeiss did a compact 25 3.5/4 it would be simple.....

Sean Reid has published a new painstaking test on the lens and compares it with other 24/25-mm lenses. He calls it "exceptional" especially as contrast and rendering are concerned. You can see the test with many examples, if you subscribe to his site: Welcome to ReidReviews
batmobile Posted May 29, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted May 29, 2009 I may try a CV 25P but doung the 21 biogon performed quite a lot better on larger prints and know that, like the 21P, some suffer decentering. I will still bear it in mind but am erring more towards a Zeiss/Leica product. That is also more likely to keep the rendering more constant. I find the ZM more contrasty than the 21P for example.
