MarkWills Posted May 24, 2009 Share #1 Posted May 24, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, New to the forum and just got a D-LUX4, thought I would say hello ask a few questions..... I part-exchanged my Canon 400D and 2 EFs lenses for the D-LUX 4, I wanted a carry everywhere camera and something low key for street shots for those places that dont like big DSLR cameras and lenses. I was lucky enough to pick up a Canon 5D from a friend recently hence the 400D was a bit redundant. Ive had the D-LUX 4 for a few days now and Im very impressed with the test shots I have tried, I really like the size its taking a while to get used to no VF. Its half term here in the UK and we are going over to Paris for a 3 night city break, I have decided to only take the DLUX4 so that we can travel light should be an interesting test - do you think Im mad should the 5D go with me as well . What do people think of the i.exposure mode, am I correct in thinking it tries to increase the dynamic range by metering for the highlights and effectivly using fill light for the shadows (like processing a RAW)? Using the fim modes - each film mode by default has the saturation, sharpening etc set at 0 with a -2 to +2 range even vibrant v std, does this mean that each mode has eg sharpening added and any adjustments you make are +/- from that particular setup? Does anyone have adjustmenst o the film modes that they think work better? parigby Posted May 25, 2009 Share #6 Posted May 25, 2009 Mark, Went through a similar process to the one you propose a few weeks back. In my instance it was Bruges. Should you take one or both ? My experiment clearly indicated that about ninety percent of shots were achieved with a little bit of adaptation to my normal shooting style. I wanted to see on the Bruges trip if just using the Digilux 4 would get me what l wanted, and l suppose that generally the camera came good. However, what l decided in the end was with the Digilux 4 alone l didn't feel totally comfortable / in control. A subsequent further short trip with the Digilux 2 and the Digilux 4 proved to be the perfect combination for me. It has made a big difference not lugging the DSLR when hoping on off buses and metros etc. When we arrived it was 31oC and very very humid I was glad of the lighter load. But to the camera I have posted a few shots (Dynamic B+W jpeg to FlickR), love free wi-fi in the hotel room. Paris 2009 - a set on Flickr Im really enjoying it at the moment, its easy to use and set up the custom functions, I can flip from a dynamic B+W jpeg setup to colour with fill flash (- 1 1/3 comensation) in seconds great. The in camera jpeg are great have shot RAW as well in tricky lighting so can PP later when I get back to lightroom. Its not a DSLR replacement, Im sure many would agree, with a DSLR I can dial up exposure, compose and shot quicker (not a problem for static stuff) and you cant get that f2.0 background blur that I can with my 50mm f1.4. But its unobtrusive (see the 2 grab shots in park and cafe) which the 50mm on my 5D really isnt. Have I missed a longer focal length well, mostly no, I used my 70-200mm so little that I traded it for a 17-40mm so my longest on the DSLR is 105, but at 60mm with 10 mega px yu have some croproom anyway. The battery life is a bit of a shock, went to 1 bar within 1.5 hours of shooting this morning, will need to grab some extra cells. Well rain looks like its over back out now, looking forward to tring some evening city light shots..... all the best Mark Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
andalus Posted May 26, 2009 Share #10 Posted May 26, 2009 Just got back from Malaysia and found I only shot one role of film with MP but many with DL4. I shot both JPG and Raw. JPG's are superb for this little camera, BTW. I kept most of them and just a few of the better shots in Raw, for some PP later with Photoshop. Please someone inform me: the Raw files from camera were about 12 megabytes. I changed them to tif format and they expanded enormously. But I note that they are about 260 or so pixels per whatever. Does this mean they cannot be printed very large. I am a newbie with this conversion stuff and what it means. ?? Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

marcoloco Posted May 26, 2009 Share #12 Posted May 26, 2009 The one thing this little wonder can´t do is take portrait shots with shallow depth of field, which is a pity, because if it was able to do that there certainly wiouldn´t be a reason to carry a DSLR with a bigger sensor aroun dat all! johnwolf Posted May 26, 2009 Share #14 Posted May 26, 2009 Mark, I think I'd feel uneasy with just my LX3. But I guess it depends on the way you shoot. I like early morning and late evening walks, and have not been satisfied with ISO performance over 200. I'd also pack a 5D and 50 1.4. You may never use it, but it's there if you want to. Yes, you save what you want to C1 and C2 and when you switch the dial those settings default. Of course you can override them without affecting the saved settings.
