jaapv Posted May 21, 2009 Share #1 Posted May 21, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Being used to the Nokton 1.2/35 and the Summilux 75 as my fast-lens team, the Summilux 24 has upset things a bit. I find the gap with the 75 a bit too much, so I have to rearrange my setup. I fear my beloved 75 will be traded in for a Summilux 50 asph coming week, as soon as Steve is back from holiday at ffordes to do some haggling. Advertisement Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 Hi jaapv, Take a look here 24 Summilux -undesirable side-effects. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
peter_n Posted May 22, 2009 Share #2 Posted May 22, 2009 I also use a 35/75 pair, but I use a 28 with my 50, not the 24. My travelling kit is 35+75 for most stuff and the 24 for extra wide. Have you tried the 24 with your 35?
kenneth Posted May 22, 2009 Share #3 Posted May 22, 2009 I too use a 35mm 50mm and 75mm combination, the 35 and 50 being Summicrons which I use most and the 75mm being a Colour Heliar f2.5mm which gets limited use hence I did not feel I could justify a Summicron. Personally, I have never found anything faster than an f2 necessary as the Summicrons work fine wide open. If I was ever to make a change, which I doubt I will, I might consider a collapsable 50mm to replace the rigid Summicron but having said that, the 50mm Summicron is such a lovely lens
Jeff S Posted May 22, 2009 Share #4 Posted May 22, 2009 Being used to the Nokton 1.2/35 and the Summilux 75 as my fast-lens team, the Summilux 24 has upset things a bit. I find the gap with the 75 a bit too much, so I have to rearrange my setup. I fear my beloved 75 will be traded in for a Summilux 50 asph coming week, as soon as Steve is back from holiday at ffordes to do some haggling. I'm always interested in the working methods of good, experienced M users. And, based on my limited involvement with this forum, you certainly fall into that category. So, I would love to know more about your thought process. I guess I tend to go out with 2 lenses for most shoots, but usually choose by focal length rather than speed...since my limited arsenal is comprised of crons and luxes, and I figure I could tweak ISO one stop if needed. If I found a lens "beloved," as you do with your 75, I wouldn't part with it unless: I lusted for something else and needed to trade for financial reasons; or, I had another equally beloved lens in the same focal length; or, I decided to stop "seeing" with a given focal length. You seem to work magic with the limited time you've used the 24, but why sell the 75? Just curious, Jaap...and eager to learn... (BTW, I own the 50 lux...beloved.) Thanks, Jeff
4X5B&W Posted May 22, 2009 Share #5 Posted May 22, 2009 The 24 and a 50 Lux (either Pre or ASPH), is a fabulous 2 lens combo. Did a month long travel recently with just that kit, I felt it was almost perfect for a compact, high performance traveling outfit. However if we ever get a full frame M9, that 35/75 combo will once again be a great choice
twittle Posted May 22, 2009 Share #6 Posted May 22, 2009 Being used to the Nokton 1.2/35 and the Summilux 75 as my fast-lens team, the Summilux 24 has upset things a bit. I find the gap with the 75 a bit too much, so I have to rearrange my setup. I fear my beloved 75 will be traded in for a Summilux 50 asph coming week, as soon as Steve is back from holiday at ffordes to do some haggling. Even though I don't shoot my 75 Lux as often as I should, I'd find it very difficult to get rid of it as it has such lovely qualities. You obviously love yours, so why not just keep it? noah_addis Posted May 22, 2009 Share #7 Posted May 22, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) The 24/50 combo is my main setup (in my case a 24 Elmarit/50 'Lux Pre-Asph). It is a nice combo but still I don't see why you need to sell your 75 if you like the lens. During my newspaper days I would often work with a 28 and 180, and I never felt anything was missing in between. Seems like the only reason to trade your 75 for a 50 'lux is if you simply want a new lens. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
jaapv Posted May 22, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted May 22, 2009 Another factor in th equation is the presence of an Apo Summicron 90 in the equation. There is a limt to funds after the hit I too with the 24 Summilux - so the 75 will go -regretfully....
marknorton Posted May 22, 2009 Share #9 Posted May 22, 2009 Come on Jaap, I'm sure you can find a few more root canals, crowns and implants to do, all in the name of suppporting Leica... and keeping that 75mm Summilux.
SJP Posted May 22, 2009 Share #10 Posted May 22, 2009 24, 50, 90 sounds like a good series but expensive with 2x lux and a cron AA. I am not in a hurry with buying lenses, but in the long run I am aiming for: 28/2 ASPH, 50/1.4 ASPH, 90/2.8 or 90/2 AA + an extreme wide 15-21 but f/4 or so, ditto 135/2.8 both probably 2nd hand. I would guess that money spent on Leica lenses is relatively safe as an investment as they hardly depreciate in value. For the M8 body that not the case or to a lesser extent. So keep the 75 lux if you can afford to.
luigi bertolotti Posted May 22, 2009 Share #11 Posted May 22, 2009 Another factor in th equation is the presence of an Apo Summicron 90 in the equation. There is a limt to funds after the hit I too with the 24 Summilux - so the 75 will go -regretfully.... Ok... this clarifies my perplexity about your abandoning the 75... I'll start to use next days my new 24 (Elmarit asph...) ... I'm curios if I'll start to feel "missing 50" : a focal that, till now, I used very seldom on M8.
